Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

(Idh): Here, meaning "when" or "at the time," referring back to the context of the people of the ditch (Ashab al-Ukhdud).
(Hum): They — referring to the tyrants and oppressors who kindled the fire.
  • عَلَيْهَا (ʿAlayha): Upon it — meaning upon the edge or brink of the ditch filled with fire.
(Quʿud): Sitting — i.e., seated firmly, remaining in place, not leaving.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse paints a chilling scene from the story of the believers who were persecuted for their faith. After describing how the oppressors dug a great trench in the earth, filled it with blazing fire, and fed it with abundant fuel, Allah now shows us their shocking state: they sat comfortably around that inferno, watching the believers burn alive. They were not merely passing by or accidentally present — they were seated, settled, and fully engaged in witnessing the torture of innocent souls. Their sitting was deliberate, their presence was intentional, and their hearts were so hardened that they found pleasure or satisfaction in this horrific spectacle.

The verse emphasizes their arrogance and cruelty: they made themselves comfortable chairs or positions around the fire, as if attending a show, while the believers were being consumed by flames. This was not an act of momentary anger but a premeditated, sustained persecution. They remained there, watching, gloating, and ensuring the punishment was carried out to its fullest extent.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear brothers and sisters, ponder deeply on this scene. These oppressors had all the power, all the comfort, and all the apparent victory in this world. They sat in luxury while the believers suffered. Yet, look at how the story ends — Allah tells us in the following verses that He is the Mighty, the Praiseworthy, and that He is Witness over all things. The oppressors may have sat comfortably in this life, but their seat will be in the fire of Hell, while the believers who were burned for their faith have earned Paradise with gardens beneath which rivers flow — that is the great success.

This verse teaches us a profound lesson: never envy the apparent comfort of those who oppose the truth. Their comfort is temporary, and their end is destruction. And never despair when you face hardship for your faith — your patience and steadfastness are witnessed by Allah Himself, who never abandons His righteous servants. The oppressors sat by the fire of this world, but the believers will sit in the eternal bliss of the Hereafter. Choose today which seat you wish to occupy, for every soul will be repaid for what it did. May Allah make us among those who are patient in faith and steadfast in truth, and may He protect us from the arrogance of the oppressors. Ameen.

📜 Verse 4-8 — Al-Buruj

Cursed were the companions of the trench
[Containing] the fire full of fuel,
When they were sitting near it
And they, to what they were doing against the believers, were witnesses.
And they resented them not except because they believed in Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy,
