Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Attaqū Allāh (اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ): Fear Allah, be mindful of Him, and fulfill His commands while avoiding what He has prohibited. It encompasses a state of consciousness where one protects oneself from Allah's displeasure by obedience.
- Al-Ṣādiqīn (الصَّادِقِينَ): The truthful ones — those who are sincere and honest in their faith, their words, their promises, and their deeds.
The Interpretation:
O you who have truly believed in Allah and His Messenger and who strive to live by His revealed law! The call here is direct and loving — it addresses the very core of your identity as believers. You are being urged to maintain a constant state of God-consciousness (taqwā) in every aspect of your lives: in what you do and what you refrain from doing, in your private moments and in your public dealings. Let your awareness of Allah be the compass that guides every decision, every word, and every action.
And alongside this call to piety comes a beautiful and profound instruction: be with the truthful. This does not merely mean sitting in their company physically — it means aligning yourself with them in character, in conduct, and in conviction. Be among those who are truthful in their faith, who do not waver in their commitments, who keep their promises, and whose words match their deeds. Be with those who are honest with Allah in their intentions, sincere in their speech, and consistent in their actions.
Why this emphasis on truthfulness? Because there is no salvation, no true success, except through it. Truthfulness is the foundation upon which all other virtues are built. When you are truthful with Allah, you worship Him with sincerity. When you are truthful with people, you build trust and harmony. When you are truthful with yourself, you recognize your shortcomings and strive to improve. The truthful ones are the people of highest rank in this world and the Hereafter — they are the ones whose hearts Allah guides, whose affairs He rectifies, and whose end He makes beautiful.
So, dear believer, let this verse be a daily reminder: guard your relationship with Allah through taqwā, and guard your relationship with others through truthfulness. In doing so, you will find yourself walking in the company of the righteous — and what a blessed company that is! The Prophet ﷺ himself was described as the most truthful of people, and his companions were known for their unwavering honesty, even before Islam. When you choose to be with the truthful, you are choosing the path of the Prophets, the martyrs, and the righteous — and Allah has promised that these are the best of companions.
Let this verse inspire you to examine your own heart: Are your words always true? Are your promises always kept? Is your faith reflected in your actions? If you find any shortcoming, know that Allah's door of repentance is open, and every step toward truthfulness is a step toward His love and pleasure. For indeed, Allah loves the truthful, and He has made truthfulness a means of tranquility in this life and a light on the Day of Judgment.
