Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Phrases:
- "Noor Allah" (نُورَ اللَّهِ): The light of Allah. This refers to the religion of Islam, the Quran, and the clear proofs and guidance that Allah has sent through His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It is the light of truth that illuminates hearts and removes the darkness of ignorance and disbelief.
- "To extinguish with their mouths" (يُطْفِئُوا بِأَفْوَاهِهِمْ): A powerful metaphor. It describes the futile attempt to blow out a great light simply by puffing air from one's mouth. This illustrates the weakness and absurdity of the disbelievers' efforts to nullify the truth through their words, mockery, and false arguments.
- "Yabaa Allah" (يَأْبَى اللَّهُ): "But Allah refuses." This expresses a firm, unyielding divine will. It signifies that Allah's decree is absolute and cannot be overridden by any creature.
- "To perfect His light" (أَن يُتِمَّ نُورَهُ): To complete, perfect, and manifest His religion in its entirety, making it prevail over all other systems and beliefs.
The Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse paints a vivid picture of the struggle between truth and falsehood. The disbelievers, driven by arrogance and denial, seek to extinguish the light of Allah—the guidance of Islam and the clear proofs of His Oneness—with nothing more than the breath of their words. They use their tongues to spread lies, cast doubts, and mock the revelation, thinking they can blow out a light that was kindled by the Creator of the heavens and the earth. Their efforts are as foolish as someone trying to extinguish the sun with a puff of air.
But Allah, the All-Powerful, refuses to let His light be diminished. He has decreed that His religion will be perfected, His message will prevail, and His truth will shine forth, no matter how much the disbelievers detest it. His will is absolute and His promise is certain. When Allah wills a matter, it comes to be, and the plans of His enemies are rendered futile.
This verse is a source of immense comfort and strength for believers across all times. It reassures us that the cause of Islam is not dependent on the acceptance of people, nor is it threatened by their rejection. The light of Allah is a divine reality that will continue to spread, guiding hearts and transforming societies, until it fills the earth. It teaches us to place our complete trust in Allah, to be steadfast in our faith, and to never fear the opposition of the disbelievers. Their schemes are weak, but Allah's support for His believing servants is mighty. The ultimate victory belongs to the truth, and the truth is the word of Allah, which none can overpower.
