Word Meanings:

  • Malja’ (مَلْجَأً): A refuge or fortified place of protection where one can seek safety.
  • Maghārāt (مَغَارَاتٍ): Caves in mountains where one can hide.
  • Muddakhal (مُدَّخَلًا): An underground tunnel or passage that provides an escape route.
  • Yajmahūn (يَجْمَحُونَ): To rush headlong with extreme haste, like a runaway horse that cannot be restrained by its reins.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah exposes the true nature of the hypocrites who outwardly claimed faith but inwardly harbored hostility toward the believers. Their hearts were filled with fear and anxiety whenever they were in the company of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his companions, because they knew that their deception could be uncovered at any moment.

Allah describes their desperate state: if these hypocrites could find any place of refuge — a strong fortress to protect them, caves in the mountains to shelter them, or even an underground tunnel to slip through — they would flee to it immediately, running with the utmost speed and urgency, like a wild horse that cannot be stopped. Their only desire was to escape from the truth and from being in the presence of the believers.

This verse reveals the depth of their hypocrisy and their inner turmoil. They were not merely passive in their opposition; they actively sought any means to distance themselves from the Prophet and his message. Their hearts were so filled with aversion to the truth that they would seize any opportunity to run away from it.

A Call to Reflection:

This vivid description serves as a powerful reminder for us today. The hypocrites' flight from the truth stands in stark contrast to the attitude of true believers, who embrace the guidance of Allah with open hearts and steadfast determination. While the hypocrites sought escape routes from the divine message, the sincere believers rush toward it with love and devotion.

Let this verse inspire us to examine our own hearts. Are we running toward the truth or away from it? Do we seek refuge in Allah's guidance, or do we look for excuses to distance ourselves from His commands? The beauty of Islam is that it offers us the greatest refuge of all — a connection with our Creator, a purpose in life, and a path to eternal success. Unlike the hypocrites who found no peace in their flight, we can find true tranquility in submission to Allah.

May Allah protect us from hypocrisy and grant us hearts that love the truth and cling to it firmly.

📜 Verse 55-59 — At-Tawbah

So let not their wealth or their children impress you. Allah only intends to punish them through them in worldly life and that their souls should depart [at death] while they are disbelievers.
And they swear by Allah that they are from among you while they are not from among you; but they are a people who are afraid.
If they could find a refuge or some caves or any place to enter [and hide], they would turn to it while they run heedlessly.
And among them are some who criticize you concerning the [distribution of] charities. If they are given from them, they approve; but if they are not given from them, at once they become angry.
If only they had been satisfied with what Allah and His Messenger gave them and said, "Sufficient for us is Allah; Allah will give us of His bounty, and [so will] His Messenger; indeed, we are desirous toward Allah," [it would have been better for them].
