Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Yahlifoon (They swear): They take solemn oaths.
- La minkum (Indeed they are of you): They claim to be part of your community and faith.
- Yafraqoon (They fear): They are terrified and panic-stricken.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Allah exposes the reality of the hypocrites who, despite their inner disbelief, swear by Allah with false oaths to the believers, saying, "We are truly with you and of your religion." Yet, Allah declares their claim to be a lie—they are not of the believers in faith or conviction, even if their outward words suggest otherwise. Their hearts are filled with kufr (disbelief), and their tongues utter what their hearts do not believe.
The reason behind their false swearing is their deep-seated fear. They are a people who dread that the believers might treat them as they treat the open enemies of Islam—through execution or capture—so they use oaths as a shield to protect themselves and their wealth. They feign loyalty and Islam out of taqiyyah (self-protection), not out of genuine faith.
This verse serves as a powerful reminder that Allah knows the hidden secrets of every heart. The hypocrites may deceive people with their words and oaths, but they cannot deceive Allah, who is All-Knowing of their inner realities. For the believers, this is a call to remain steadfast and to place their trust in Allah alone, not in the empty promises of those who only seek their own safety.
A Da'wah Reflection:
How beautiful is the path of sincerity! The believer's strength lies not in false oaths or outward pretenses, but in a heart firmly rooted in faith and honesty. Allah loves those who are truthful in word and deed, and He promises them honor in this life and the next. Let us strive to be among the sincere ones, whose words match their hearts, and whose actions reflect their belief—for Allah sees all, and His reward for the truthful is beyond imagination. Beware of hypocrisy, for it is a disease that destroys the soul, while sincerity is the key to Allah's pleasure and eternal success.
