Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • يَلْمِزُكَ (yalmizuka): To find fault with you, criticize you, or blame you behind your back or in a manner that belittles your actions.
  • الصَّدَقَاتِ (as-sadaqat): The obligatory alms and charitable contributions, specifically referring to the distribution of Zakat and public funds.
  • يَسْخَطُونَ (yaskhatoon): To become angry, displeased, or resentful.

Explanation of the Verse:

Among the hypocrites, there are those who criticize you, O Messenger, regarding the distribution of charity and alms. They question your fairness and accuse you of bias when dividing the wealth that Allah has entrusted to you. However, their criticism is not rooted in sincere concern for justice—it is driven purely by selfish desires. If they receive a share from these funds, they become satisfied and silent, praising the distribution as just. But if they are denied what they want, or if their share does not meet their greedy expectations, they immediately become furious and voice their discontent, accusing you of injustice and favoritism.

This verse exposes the true nature of such individuals: their loyalty is not to the truth or to the principles of Islam, but to their own worldly interests. Their judgment of fairness is entirely conditional upon their personal gain. When their desires are met, they are pleased; when they are not, they turn to resentment and blame—regardless of what is actually right or wise in the distribution.

The verse serves as a profound lesson for believers. It teaches us that the measure of a person's faith is not in their reaction when they get what they want, but in their conduct when they do not. A true believer accepts the decisions of those in authority with patience and trust in Allah's wisdom, knowing that the distribution of wealth and resources is not based on personal preference but on divine guidance and the greater good of the community.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, reflect on your own heart. Are you among those who are pleased with Allah's decree only when it aligns with your desires? Or are you among those who submit wholeheartedly, trusting that Allah—and those He has placed in authority—know what is best? Islam calls us to a higher standard: to be content with what Allah has given us, to avoid envy and resentment, and to purify our hearts from the love of worldly gain that breeds hypocrisy. Let this verse be a mirror for your soul. Strive to be among those whose faith is steady, whose gratitude is constant, and whose trust in Allah is unshaken—whether they receive much or little. For true success lies not in the abundance of what you acquire, but in the purity of how you respond to what Allah has decreed. And know that Allah sees all hearts and will reward those who are patient and sincere.

And they swear by Allah that they are from among you while they are not from among you; but they are a people who are afraid.
If they could find a refuge or some caves or any place to enter [and hide], they would turn to it while they run heedlessly.

And among them are some who criticize you concerning the [distribution of] charities. If they are given from them, they approve; but if they are not given from them, at once they become angry.
If only they had been satisfied with what Allah and His Messenger gave them and said, "Sufficient for us is Allah; Allah will give us of His bounty, and [so will] His Messenger; indeed, we are desirous toward Allah," [it would have been better for them].
Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [zakah] and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveler - an obligation [imposed] by Allah. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.
