Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse opens Surah Ash-Sharh with a gentle, loving rhetorical question from Allah to His beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): "Did We not expand your chest for you?" The question is posed not to seek an answer, but to affirm a magnificent reality: that Allah had already granted His Prophet a spiritual opening of the heart — a divine expansion that made him receptive to revelation, resilient in the face of hardship, and capable of carrying the immense weight of prophethood.

This "expansion of the chest" is a profound spiritual gift. It means Allah filled the Prophet's heart with tranquility, wisdom, patience, and an unshakable connection to his Lord. It enabled him to receive the Qur'an with ease, to embrace the heavy responsibilities of calling people to monotheism, and to embody the noblest of moral character. It also prepared him to accept Allah's divine decrees — both the easy and the difficult — with complete contentment and submission.

The verse reminds every believer that Allah, in His infinite mercy, can expand our hearts as well. When we feel constricted by anxiety, overwhelmed by trials, or burdened by the weight of life's challenges, we should turn to the One who opens hearts and eases burdens. Just as He expanded the Prophet's chest, He can illuminate our hearts with faith, grant us clarity in confusion, and replace our distress with serenity.

This opening verse is a call to reflect on Allah's countless blessings upon us — the greatest of which is the gift of guidance and the peace that comes with faith.
