Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • عَبْدًا (ʿAbdan): A servant/slave — here referring to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as Allah’s devoted servant.
  • إِذَا صَلَّىٰ (Idhā Ṣallā): When he prays — i.e., when he stands in worship before his Lord, particularly at the Kaʿbah.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse continues the rhetorical question posed in the preceding verse: "Have you seen the one who forbids a servant when he prays?" The "servant" is Muhammad (peace be upon him), and the one forbidding is Abu Jahl — a man of arrogance and tyranny who dared to prevent the Prophet from performing prayer at the Sacred House. The verse highlights the shocking nature of this act: a mere mortal, himself a servant of Allah, forbidding another servant from humbling himself before his Creator. The word "servant" is deliberately used to emphasize the beauty and purpose of worship — a servant’s very essence is to obey and adore his Master. To forbid such an act is the pinnacle of wrongdoing and ignorance. The verse also subtly reminds the reader of the honor of being Allah’s servant; indeed, the Prophet is described in the Qur’an as "His servant" as a title of nobility and closeness to Allah.

Reflection and Daʿwah:

This verse teaches us the sanctity of prayer and the courage to uphold it, no matter who opposes us. Imagine the scene: the Prophet, standing in sincere devotion, is threatened and mocked by a powerful man. Yet, the Qur’an immortalizes this moment to console every believer who faces ridicule or oppression for their faith. Prayer is not merely a ritual — it is a lifeline, a direct connection to the Almighty. No tyrant, no matter how mighty, can sever that bond unless we allow them to. Dear reader, if you ever feel shy, embarrassed, or pressured to abandon your prayers in front of others, remember this verse. Your prayer is your honor, your strength, and your identity as a servant of Allah. Do not trade it for the approval of creation. Stand firm, pray with humility, and know that Allah sees your struggle and will elevate you. The One who defended His Prophet then is the same Lord who defends His righteous servants today. So, prostrate to your Lord, draw near to Him, and let your worship be a beacon of light in a world of darkness.
