Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Anzalnāhu (أَنزَلْنَاهُ): "We sent it down" — the pronoun refers to the Qur'an, indicating its divine origin and majestic revelation.
  • Laylat al-Qadr (لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ): "The Night of Decree" or "The Night of Honor" — a night of immense greatness, honor, and divine determination.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound opening verse of Surah Al-Qadr, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) declares that He sent down the Qur'an — the final, complete, and unaltered revelation — during the Night of Decree. This is the same night that falls within the blessed month of Ramadan, as clarified in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:185): "The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur'an."

The verse indicates that the Qur'an was revealed in its entirety from the Preserved Tablet (Al-Lawh Al-Mahfuth) to the lowest heaven (Bayt al-'Izzah) on this night, and from there it was revealed gradually to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) over approximately twenty-three years, according to events and circumstances.

This night is called "Laylat al-Qadr" because it is the night when Allah decrees and determines the affairs of His creation for the coming year — including their lifespans, provisions, and destinies — as part of His perfect wisdom and eternal knowledge. It is also called so because of its immense honor, dignity, and status in the sight of Allah.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear believer, ponder the magnificence of this statement! The Creator of the heavens and the earth, the Lord of all worlds, chose a single night to begin the revelation of His final message to humanity. This night is not like any other night — it carries a weight that transcends time itself. The Qur'an, which has transformed hearts, built civilizations, and guided billions, descended upon this blessed night.

This verse invites you to recognize the immense value of the Qur'an and the night it was revealed. It is a call to reconnect with the Book of Allah, to read it with reflection, to understand its meanings, and to implement its teachings in your daily life. The Qur'an is not merely a book to be recited; it is a complete way of life, a source of healing, guidance, and mercy.

Seek this blessed night in the last ten nights of Ramadan, especially the odd nights. Stand in prayer, supplicate, and ask Allah for His forgiveness and mercy. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught us to say on this night: "Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul-'afwa fa'fu 'anni" (O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness, so forgive me).

May Allah enable us to witness this blessed night and to benefit from its immense rewards, and may He make the Qur'an a light for our hearts and a guide for our lives.
