Surah Al-Qadr — Verse 2

Explanation of the Verse:

After Allah Almighty mentioned the greatness of Laylatul-Qadr and the revelation of the Qur'an upon it, He then addresses His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with a rhetorical question that magnifies the matter even further: "And what will make you know what the Night of Decree is?"

This is a style of astonishment and glorification — as if to say: O Prophet, you have heard of its greatness, but do you truly comprehend the full reality of this night? Its rank is so elevated, its blessings so abundant, and its virtue so immense that the human mind — even the mind of the noblest of creation — cannot fully grasp its true essence and worth.

The verse serves to draw the listener's attention and stir the heart to reflect upon the extraordinary nature of this night. It is a night that carries within it the decree of all affairs for the coming year, a night when angels descend in multitudes, a night that is better than a thousand months, and a night of peace and blessings until the break of dawn.

This rhetorical question also instills in the believer a profound sense of longing and eagerness — if the Prophet himself is told that he cannot fully comprehend its greatness, then how much more should we, as ordinary believers, strive to seek it, honor it, and seize its blessings with humility and devotion?

Dear Muslim brother and sister — this verse awakens within us a beautiful yearning. Allah is telling us that this night is beyond our imagination, beyond our comprehension, yet He has generously granted us access to it. He has not left us unaware of when it occurs, but has told us to seek it in the last ten nights of Ramadan, especially on the odd nights.

So let us not let this precious opportunity slip away. Let us fill these blessed nights with sincere prayer, heartfelt supplication, recitation of the Qur'an, and seeking forgiveness. For whoever stands in prayer on Laylatul-Qadr out of faith and seeking reward, their past sins will be forgiven. This is the night that can change your destiny, elevate your rank, and bring you closer to your Lord in ways you never imagined.

Seize it, for it is a treasure beyond measure — a single night better than a lifetime of worship spanning eighty-three years and more. May Allah grant us all the ability to witness this blessed night and accept our deeds. Ameen.
