Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- إِيَّاكَ (Iyyāka): You alone, exclusively.
- نَعْبُدُ (Na'budu): We worship, humble ourselves, and submit in devotion.
- نَسْتَعِينُ (Nasta'īn): We seek help, support, and assistance.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, the servant declares with full sincerity and awareness: "You alone, O Allah, do we worship, and from You alone do we seek help." This is a profound statement of monotheism (Tawḥīd) that reshapes the heart and directs the soul entirely toward its Creator.
The phrase "You alone we worship" means that all acts of devotion—prayer, supplication, sacrifice, pilgrimage, love, fear, hope, and complete obedience—are reserved exclusively for Allah. No partner, no intermediary, no created being shares any portion of this worship. The believer does not bow to any power, does not place ultimate trust in any human, and does not direct their deepest hopes to anyone other than Allah.
Then the verse repeats "and You alone we seek for help" to emphasize that just as worship belongs exclusively to Allah, so too does the request for assistance. The servant recognizes that all affairs are in Allah's hands—not even the weight of a speck of dust is outside His control. Whether in matters of religion or worldly life, the believer turns to Allah first and foremost, knowing that He is the true Helper, the Sustainer, and the One who grants success.
This verse carries a profound cure for the diseases of the heart. It purifies the soul from the inclination to rely on created beings, from showing off in acts of worship (riyā'), and from pride and arrogance. When a person truly internalizes this verse, they realize their complete dependence on Allah and their utter need for His grace in every moment.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear believer, when you recite this verse in every unit of your prayer, you are making a sacred covenant with your Lord. You are declaring: "My worship is for You alone, and my trust is in You alone." This is the essence of Islam—complete surrender to Allah and absolute reliance upon Him. Let this verse transform your daily life: when you face difficulties, turn to Him; when you achieve success, thank Him; when you feel weak, seek His strength. For He is the One who hears, answers, and never abandons those who sincerely call upon Him.
