Word Meanings:

(Ad-Durr): Hardship, affliction, harm, or distress—whether physical, financial, or emotional.
(Li-janbihi): Lying on his side—i.e., in a state of weakness or illness.
(Kashafna): We removed or lifted away.
(Marra): He passed on, continued, or went away—meaning he resumed his previous way.
(Al-Musrifin): Those who transgress beyond limits—the extravagant in sin, the obstinate disbelievers.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse paints a vivid picture of the human condition—a profound lesson in gratitude and heedlessness. When affliction touches a person—be it sickness, poverty, fear, or any hardship—he turns to his Lord in desperate supplication, calling upon Allah in every posture imaginable: lying on his side, sitting, or standing. In that moment of distress, the person forgets all else and clings to Allah, acknowledging his utter dependence on Him, humbling himself before His mercy.

Yet, the moment Allah answers his call, lifts the hardship, and restores him to comfort, that same person turns away as if nothing had happened. He walks on as though he had never raised his hands in prayer, never shed a tear in supplication, never begged for relief. He forgets the One who saved him, abandons gratitude, and slips back into his former ways—as if the trial and the deliverance were both mere illusions.

This is the tragedy of the heedless soul: it remembers Allah only in times of need and forgets Him in times of ease. The verse then concludes with a powerful truth: just as this person’s behavior is made to seem fair to him, so too are the deeds of the transgressors—those who exceed all bounds in disbelief and sin—made to appear attractive to them. They see nothing wrong with their ingratitude, because their hearts have been sealed by their own persistent rebellion.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, pause and examine your own heart. Have you ever found yourself calling upon Allah in a moment of crisis, promising to change, to be grateful, to draw closer to Him—only to forget those promises when the crisis passed? This verse is a mirror for all of us. Let it awaken you to the beauty of constant gratitude. The One who hears you in your distress is the One who deserves your praise in your ease. Do not be like those who remember their Lord only when they need Him. Be among the grateful—those who praise Allah in good times and bad, who know that every breath is a blessing, and who understand that the true test is not the hardship itself, but how we behave after the hardship is lifted.

Islam calls you to a life of continuous connection with your Creator—not a fair-weather relationship, but a bond that strengthens in both ease and difficulty. When you are blessed, thank Him. When you are tested, call upon Him. And when relief comes, let your gratitude be a bridge to even greater closeness with Allah. This is the path of the wise, the path of the successful, and the path that leads to eternal bliss.

📜 Verse 10-14 — Yunus

Their call therein will be, "Exalted are You, O Allah," and their greeting therein will be, "Peace." And the last of their call will be, "Praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds!"
And if Allah was to hasten for the people the evil [they invoke] as He hastens for them the good, their term would have been ended for them. But We leave the ones who do not expect the meeting with Us, in their transgression, wandering blindly
And when affliction touches man, he calls upon Us, whether lying on his side or sitting or standing; but when We remove from him his affliction, he continues [in disobedience] as if he had never called upon Us to [remove] an affliction that touched him. Thus is made pleasing to the transgressors that which they have been doing
And We had already destroyed generations before you when they wronged, and their messengers had come to them with clear proofs, but they were not to believe. Thus do We recompense the criminal people
Then We made you successors in the land after them so that We may observe how you will do.
