Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse reveals a profound aspect of Allah's mercy and wisdom. Allah informs us that if He were to respond to people's calls for evil and harm upon themselves — just as He responds to their calls for good and benefit — they would have been destroyed instantly. When a person is overcome with anger or distress, they may impulsively pray against themselves, their children, or their wealth, saying things like "O Allah, destroy me!" or "O Allah, curse my wealth!" If Allah were to answer such prayers immediately, as He answers prayers for goodness, no one would survive.
But Allah, in His infinite mercy and forbearance, does not hasten the response to such harmful supplications. He gives people time, allowing them to calm down, reflect, and repent. This delay is not a sign of neglect but a manifestation of His compassion — He withholds what would harm His servants, even when they ask for it.
The verse then addresses those who do not anticipate meeting their Lord — those who neither fear His punishment nor hope for His reward. Such people, in their arrogance and rebellion, wander blindly in their transgression. Allah leaves them to their own devices as a form of divine justice and gradual leading toward their end. This is not abandonment out of indifference, but rather a measured response that allows them to either wake up from their heedlessness or face the consequences of their persistent denial.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on the immense mercy of your Lord! The same Allah who could destroy you in an instant for a careless prayer uttered in anger instead chooses to protect you, forgive you, and give you countless opportunities to return to Him. He does not hasten punishment but hastens reward. He delays what harms you and grants what benefits you. This is the love of Allah for His creation — a love so profound that He withholds even what you demand when it is not good for you.
How beautiful is this religion that teaches us about a Lord who is patient with His servants, who knows our weaknesses and our moments of rashness, and who still opens His doors of mercy wide open. Let this verse inspire you to turn to Allah with hope, to trust His wisdom in all matters, and to never despair of His mercy — for He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.
