Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Kadhdhabūka (كَذَّبُوكَ): They deny you or reject you as a liar.
  • Barī’ūn (بَرِيئُونَ): Free, innocent, or disassociated.
  • Barī’ (بَرِيء): Free, innocent, or disassociated (singular form).

Tafsir (Explanation):

If these polytheists persist in denying you, O Messenger, and reject the message you have brought, then do not grieve or despair. Allah instructs you to declare clearly and with dignity: "For me are my deeds, and for you are your deeds." This means that I am responsible for my own actions and will be rewarded for my efforts in conveying the truth, while you are responsible for your own actions and will bear their consequences. You are completely free from any accountability for what I do, and I am completely free from any accountability for what you do. No soul shall bear the burden of another, and each person will stand before Allah alone to answer for their own choices.

This verse teaches us a profound lesson in patience, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was commanded not to engage in futile arguments or attempts to force people into belief, but rather to state his position clearly and then leave the matter to Allah. This establishes a beautiful principle: we deliver the message with sincerity and wisdom, but we do not control the hearts of others. Guidance comes only from Allah.

For the believer, this verse is a source of great comfort. When you face rejection or mockery for your faith, remember that your duty is simply to convey the truth with excellence and then entrust the outcome to Allah. Your reward is with Him, and their accountability is with Him as well. This frees you from anxiety and allows you to focus on perfecting your own character and deeds.

Moreover, this verse encourages mutual respect even in disagreement. While we must clearly distinguish truth from falsehood, we should not resort to hostility or aggression toward those who reject our message. Instead, we maintain our integrity, uphold our principles, and leave judgment to the All-Knowing Judge.

How beautiful is this Islamic teaching! It combines firmness in faith with gentleness in dealing with others. It protects the believer from despair and frustration while preserving the dignity of both parties. Let this verse inspire you to be patient in the face of opposition, to focus on your own growth, and to trust that Allah’s justice will prevail on the Day when all secrets are revealed and every soul receives what it has earned.

📜 Verse 39-43 — Yunus

Rather, they have denied that which they encompass not in knowledge and whose interpretation has not yet come to them. Thus did those before them deny. Then observe how was the end of the wrongdoers.
And of them are those who believe in it, and of them are those who do not believe in it. And your Lord is most knowing of the corrupters
And if they deny you, [O Muhammad], then say, "For me are my deeds, and for you are your deeds. You are disassociated from what I do, and I am disassociated from what you do."
And among them are those who listen to you. But can you cause the deaf to hear, although they will not use reason?
And among them are those who look at you. But can you guide the blind although they will not [attempt to] see?
