And had your Lord willed, those on earth would have believed - all of them entirely. Then, [O Muhammad], would you compel the people in order that they become believers?

Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "Law shā'a rabbuka" — If your Lord had willed; meaning, if Allah had decreed and desired it by His absolute will.
  • "Āmana man fi al-arḍ kulluhum jamī'an" — Every single person on earth would have believed, collectively and without exception.
  • "Afa anta tukrihu al-nās" — Are you, O Prophet, going to compel people by force and coercion?
  • "Ḥattā yakūnū mu'minīn" — Until they become believers, i.e., forcing them into faith against their will.

Explanation of the Verse:

O Prophet, if your Lord had willed that every single soul on the face of the earth — from the first to the last — should believe in what you have brought, then not a single person would have rejected the truth. All of humanity would have entered the fold of faith, willingly or unwillingly, because nothing can oppose Allah's will. But your Lord, in His infinite wisdom and perfect justice, did not will that for everyone. He has a profound purpose behind this: He guides whom He wills out of His grace and mercy, and He leaves astray whom He wills out of His perfect justice and wisdom. No one can be forced into true faith, because faith is a matter of the heart — and the heart's guidance is solely in the Hands of Allah alone.

So, O beloved Messenger, do not grieve yourself to the point of exhaustion over those who turn away. It is not within your power — nor was it ever your task — to compel people to believe by force or pressure. Your duty is only to convey the message clearly, with wisdom and beautiful preaching. The matter of their guidance or misguidance rests entirely with Allah, the All-Knowing, the All-Wise.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer and every caller to Islam. It teaches us that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, despite being the most beloved of creation to Allah, was not given the power to force anyone into faith — so how can we, his followers, imagine that we can change hearts through harshness, compulsion, or aggression? The heart is a sacred sanctuary that only its Creator can open. Our role is to present the truth with beauty, patience, and sincerity — and then leave the results to Allah.

At the same time, this verse is a source of immense comfort for those who strive in the path of Allah. When you see people rejecting the truth despite your best efforts, do not despair. Do not let sadness consume you. You are not responsible for their choices — you are only responsible for delivering the message. And know that Allah's wisdom is greater than our limited understanding. Perhaps among those who reject today are those who will embrace faith tomorrow. Perhaps the very person who argues with you now will one day become a pillar of this religion. Nothing is impossible for Allah.

So, dear believer, carry this beautiful balance in your heart: strive with all your might to convey the truth, but surrender the outcome to Allah with complete trust. And never forget — the same Allah who guided you when you were lost is fully capable of guiding every soul on this earth. His mercy is vast, His wisdom is perfect, and His promise is true.

📜 Verse 97-101 — Yunus

Even if every sign should come to them, until they see the painful punishment.
Then has there not been a [single] city that believed so its faith benefited it except the people of Jonah? When they believed, We removed from them the punishment of disgrace in worldly life and gave them enjoyment for a time.
And had your Lord willed, those on earth would have believed - all of them entirely. Then, [O Muhammad], would you compel the people in order that they become believers?
And it is not for a soul to believe except by permission of Allah, and He will place defilement upon those who will not use reason.
Say, "Observe what is in the heavens and earth." But of no avail will be signs or warners to a people who do not believe
