Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • لَتَرَوُنَّ (La-tarawunna): You will certainly see with your own eyes — a solemn oath emphasizing absolute certainty.
  • الْجَحِيمَ (Al-Jaheem): The blazing, fiercely burning Fire of Hell, one of its most intense descriptions.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse delivers a decisive, emphatic truth: every single human being will, without any doubt, witness the Hellfire with their own eyes on the Day of Judgment. The use of the emphatic oath form in Arabic — "La-tarawunna" — carries the weight of a divine guarantee, leaving no room for skepticism or evasion. This seeing is not metaphorical or distant; it is a direct, personal confrontation with the reality of Jahannam, a sight so overwhelming that it will erase every distraction of worldly accumulation.

The verse comes as a stern wake-up call to those consumed by the obsession of amassing wealth, status, and possessions — the very obsession that blinds hearts to the Hereafter. If only they truly knew, with certainty, what awaits them, they would abandon their heedlessness and rush to save themselves from destruction. This vision of the Fire is not merely punitive; it is a mercy in disguise, for it is shown to all — believers and disbelievers alike — so that the righteous may appreciate the salvation they were granted, and the heedless may have no excuse.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse is not meant to terrify you into despair, but to awaken you into action. The fact that you will see the Fire is certain — but whether you will enter it or pass by it safely depends on what you do today. Every breath you take is an opportunity to turn back to Allah, to prioritize what truly matters over the fleeting illusions of this world. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us to remember the Destroyer of Pleasures — death — and to prepare for the Day when eyes will be fixed and hearts will be trembling. Let this certainty transform your life: pray your prayers, give in charity, speak the truth, and treat others with kindness. The Fire is real, but so is Allah's mercy — and His mercy is closer to you than your own jugular vein, if only you reach for it through sincere repentance and good deeds. Do not let the love of wealth and status rob you of the eternal bliss that awaits those who prioritize their Lord. Today is the day to change; tomorrow may be too late.
