Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Kallā (كَلَّا): A strong Arabic particle of rebuke and denial, meaning "No indeed!" or "Absolutely not!" It firmly rejects the false assumptions of the disbeliever.
- La-yunbadhanna (لَيُنْبَذَنَّ): A emphatic oath construction meaning "he will surely be thrown" or "cast away" with force and violence.
- Al-Hutamah (الْحُطَمَةِ): One of the names of Hellfire, derived from the root meaning "to crush" or "to break into pieces." It describes the Fire that shatters whatever is cast into it due to its intense severity.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah Almighty refutes the arrogant illusion of the wealthy scoffer who believes his wealth will grant him immortality and protect him from accountability. The verse declares with an emphatic oath: "No indeed! He will surely be hurled into the Crushing Fire!"
This is a terrifying reality that shatters every false hope. The "Hutamah" is not merely a fire—it is a Fire that crushes, grinds, and breaks every bone and every part of the body thrown into it, only to restore it and repeat the crushing anew. Its heat is so intense, its torment so severe, that nothing cast within it remains intact.
The verse uses the passive form "yunbadhanna" (will be thrown) to convey the utter humiliation and powerlessness of the one who once walked proudly upon the earth, boasting of his riches. He who thought himself mighty will be cast like worthless refuse into the depths of Hell—stripped of all dignity, all wealth, all status.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and ponder: what is it that makes a person feel secure? Is it wealth, status, or the accumulation of possessions? This verse strips away every false security and confronts us with the ultimate reality—that no amount of worldly gain can shield us from the consequences of our actions.
The Qur'an speaks to us today with the same clarity and urgency. It invites us to wake up before it is too late, to turn to our Creator in humility, and to invest in what truly lasts: faith, good deeds, and sincere repentance. The door of mercy is open wide, but the Fire is real, and its crushing torment is reserved for those who persist in arrogance and denial.
Let this verse be a gentle yet firm reminder: we are not created for mere amusement or accumulation. We are created for a purpose far greater—to know our Lord, to worship Him, and to prepare for the Day when every soul shall be recompensed for what it has earned. Choose the path of safety and success before the inevitable meeting with the Crushing Fire.
