Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • يَحْسَبُ (Yahsabu): He thinks or assumes, based on delusion and ignorance rather than certainty.
  • أَخْلَدَهُ (Akhladahu): Made him immortal, i.e., caused him to remain forever (in this worldly life).

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse unveils the dangerous illusion that grips the heart of the one who amasses wealth and constantly counts it. Such a person, in his profound ignorance and heedlessness, comes to believe that his wealth will grant him eternal life in this world—that it will shield him from death, protect him from the inevitable end, and secure him against the Day of Reckoning. He imagines that his riches are a fortress that will keep him alive forever, sparing him from the fate that befalls every soul. This is a sheer delusion, born of arrogance and a deep attachment to the fleeting pleasures of this world. The reality, which he fails to grasp, is that no amount of wealth can postpone death by a single moment, nor can it ransom its owner from the accountability that awaits him before his Lord. His wealth neither prolongs his life nor saves him from the consequences of his deeds; rather, it becomes a source of his ruin and a witness against him.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound truth: how often do we see people who dedicate their entire lives to accumulating fortunes, only to leave it all behind in the blink of an eye? The wealth they so proudly hoarded becomes an inheritance for others, while they face the reality of their deeds alone. Islam lovingly awakens us from this slumber, reminding us that true success lies not in the abundance of possessions, but in the purity of the heart and the sincerity of our actions. Let this verse be a gentle nudge for you to reassess your priorities—invest in what truly lasts: your faith, your character, and your good deeds. For these are the treasures that will accompany you when all else fades away, and they are the keys to an eternal life far greater than anything this world can offer. Embrace the guidance of the Qur'an, and let it free you from the chains of worldly illusion, leading you to a peace that transcends all wealth.
