Word Meanings:
- يُرَاءُونَ (Yura'un): They show off, they perform acts for the sake of being seen and praised by people, rather than for the sake of Allah alone.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse describes those who perform their acts of worship and good deeds not sincerely for Allah, but to be seen and admired by others. They pray when people are watching, but neglect their prayers when they are alone. Their worship is hollow, driven by the desire for social approval and reputation rather than devotion to their Creator. This is a trait of the hypocrites—they display piety in public but abandon it in private. Their deeds, though they may appear righteous on the outside, carry no weight with Allah because the intention behind them is corrupted. They seek praise from creation while ignoring the command of the Creator.
A Call to Sincerity:
Dear believer, let this verse be a mirror for your heart. Ask yourself: when you pray, give charity, or do good, is your intention purely for Allah? Or does a whisper of wanting others to notice you creep in? Sincerity (ikhlas) is the soul of every deed. A small act done sincerely for Allah is far greater in His sight than a grand act done for show. Purify your intentions, and let your worship be a private conversation between you and your Lord—for He sees what no one else sees, and He rewards what no one else can reward. Guard your heart, for Allah loves those who worship Him in secret, and He will honor them on the Day when no honor but His remains.
