Word Meanings:

  • Al-Ma'un (الْمَاعُونَ): This refers to small, everyday items or assistance that people commonly lend or share with one another, such as utensils, tools, or other household necessities. It can also refer to the obligatory charity (Zakat) that is due to the poor and needy.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse describes a blameworthy trait of those who are heedless of their prayer and who show off in their acts of worship. They not only neglect their duties toward Allah, but they also withhold kindness and assistance from their fellow human beings. They refuse to lend even the simplest of items—things that cause them no harm or loss to share—such as a pot, a bucket, or a needle. Their hearts are hardened, and their hands are clenched, unwilling to extend help to others in even the smallest matters.

Some scholars interpret "al-ma'un" as referring to the obligatory charity (Zakat), meaning that these individuals withhold the rights of the poor and needy from their wealth. Others understand it more broadly as any form of assistance or lending that costs nothing to give but brings great ease to the one in need. Either way, the verse condemns a character that is utterly selfish—one that neither fulfills the rights of Allah nor the rights of His creation.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse gently but firmly awakens our hearts to a profound truth: true faith is not merely a matter of ritual, but of compassion in action. Islam teaches us that the smallest act of kindness—offering a cup, lending a tool, or sharing a moment of help—is a form of worship that draws us closer to Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "Do not belittle any good deed, even if it is meeting your brother with a cheerful face."

So let us ask ourselves: Are we among those who give freely, or among those who withhold? Let us open our hands and hearts, for in helping others we are truly helping ourselves. The one who is generous with what costs him little will find that Allah is Generous with what costs Him nothing—His mercy, His love, and His eternal reward. Let this verse be a gentle reminder that our faith shines brightest when we serve His creation with love and sincerity.
