Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Sāhūn (سَاهُونَ): Negligent, heedless, or unmindful. It refers to those who are careless and inattentive, not those who occasionally forget due to human weakness, but those who habitually neglect the essence and timing of the prayer.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse describes a specific group of people who are doomed to destruction and severe punishment—those who pray but are utterly heedless of their prayers. They are not people who have abandoned prayer altogether; rather, they perform it outwardly but with a heart full of negligence. They delay their prayers beyond their appointed times, rush through them without humility or focus, and fail to observe the proper conditions and pillars of the prayer. Their minds wander during the prayer, and their hearts are preoccupied with worldly matters. They treat the prayer as a mere ritual or a burden to be discharged, not as a sacred connection with their Lord.
This heedlessness is a grave spiritual disease. The prayer is the pillar of the religion and the first deed for which a person will be held accountable on the Day of Judgment. To neglect it—whether by delaying it, performing it carelessly, or being mentally absent during it—is a sign of a weak faith and a heart that has lost its attachment to Allah. The verse serves as a stern warning that such negligence leads to ruin, both in this world and the Hereafter.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, let this verse awaken your heart! Your prayer is your lifeline, your daily appointment with your Creator. When you stand before Allah in prayer, you are speaking directly to Him, and He is responding to you. How can you let your mind drift to the marketplace, your worries, or your plans while you are in the presence of the King of Kings?
Strive to pray on time, with presence of heart and humility of soul. Remember that the prayer is not a burden—it is a mercy, a source of peace, and a means of purification. When you perfect your prayer, you will find tranquility in your heart, light in your path, and success in your life. Do not be among those who are heedless, for their loss is immense. Instead, be among those who cherish their prayers, who find joy in standing before their Lord, and who will be honored with His pleasure and Paradise. Let every prayer be a fresh beginning, a moment of closeness to Allah that transforms your day and elevates your soul.
