Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Habita" (حبط) — to become void, nullified, or rendered worthless; all the reward and benefit of an action is completely erased.
- "Ma sana'u" (ما صنعوا) — what they did or accomplished in this worldly life.
- "Batil" (باطل) — false, futile, or devoid of truth and substance.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse delivers a decisive and sobering verdict regarding those who perform deeds for worldly gain alone, without sincere faith or the intention of seeking Allah’s pleasure. Allah tells us that such people — who strive and labor in this life, perhaps even doing things that appear good and beneficial — will find that in the Hereafter, their only portion is the Fire. They will have nothing else awaiting them but the scorching torment of Hell, for they exhausted their share of good in this world and reserved nothing for the life to come.
Moreover, everything they built and accomplished in this world will be rendered utterly void. Their deeds, however impressive they may have seemed, will collapse into nothingness on that Day, because they were not founded upon faith and were not directed toward Allah. Their works were like a mirage in the desert — appearing as water from a distance, but upon arrival, nothing but barren sand. Since their intentions were corrupted — aimed at showing off, gaining status, or securing worldly benefits — their actions are stripped of all value in the sight of Allah.
This verse serves as a profound reminder that the acceptance of deeds depends not merely on their outward form, but on the inner intention and the foundation of faith. A deed performed without sincere belief in Allah and the Last Day is like a beautiful building constructed on sand — it may stand for a while, but when the storm of the Hereafter comes, it will crumble completely.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart to the precious value of sincere intention. How many of us perform acts of charity, kindness, or even worship, yet our hearts are attached to the praise of people rather than the pleasure of Allah? The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught us that actions are judged by intentions, and every person will have what they intended. So let us purify our hearts and renew our intentions, making every deed — big or small — solely for the sake of Allah. For the One who sees the hidden depths of our hearts is the One who rewards with the greatest of rewards: eternal bliss in His Paradise. Do not let your efforts be wasted — anchor them in faith, and direct them toward the eternal life that never ends. This is the path of true success, and it is open to every one of us, right here, right now.
