Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Phrases:
- Al-Hayat al-Dunya (الحياة الدنيا): The worldly life, with all its fleeting pleasures, pursuits, and material attractions.
- Zeenataha (وزينتها): Its adornment and splendor — the outward beauty, wealth, status, and comforts that allure people.
- Nuwaffi ilayhim (نوفّ إليهم): We will fully pay them and deliver in full.
- La yubkhasun (لا يُبخسون): They will not be deprived or shortchanged in any way.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse addresses a profound reality about human intentions and the divine system of recompense. Allah, the Most Wise, declares that whoever directs their deeds and efforts solely toward the worldly life — seeking its pleasures, its adornments, its status, and its fleeting comforts — without any sincere desire for the Hereafter, then Allah will grant them the full reward of their worldly efforts in this very life. They will receive health, provision, security, and the fulfillment of their worldly ambitions — all in complete measure, without any reduction or injustice.
The verse makes clear that Allah is perfectly just and generous. Even for those who do not believe in the Hereafter or who work only for worldly gains, Allah does not cheat them out of what they strive for. If they do good deeds — acts of charity, kindness, or excellence — with purely worldly intentions, they may still see the fruits of those deeds in this life: success, comfort, and ease. They will not be wronged in the least.
However, the deeper implication — which the following verse (16) clarifies — is that such people will have nothing left for them in the Hereafter. Their account is settled entirely in this world, and in the life to come, they will find no share of eternal bliss because their intentions never reached beyond the temporary.
A Call to Reflection and Sincerity:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on the profound wisdom in this verse. Allah, in His perfect justice, gives every soul what it truly seeks. If a person's horizon is limited to this world, then this world is all they will receive — and even that is granted in full, for Allah does not wrong anyone. But what a loss it is to trade an eternal, everlasting life of bliss for a few fleeting moments of comfort!
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us that deeds are judged by intentions, and every person will have what they intended. So ask yourself: What is your intention when you pray, when you give charity, when you help others? Is your heart yearning for the eternal gardens of Paradise, or is it satisfied with the temporary applause and rewards of this world?
Islam calls you to elevate your ambition. Do not settle for the small change of this life when the treasure of the Hereafter awaits. Let your deeds be sincere for Allah alone, and you will find that Allah grants you both — goodness in this world and the ultimate reward in the next. For Allah says elsewhere: "Whoever desires the Hereafter and strives for it with the necessary effort, while being a believer — then it is those whose striving will be appreciated" (Al-Isra: 19).
So raise your gaze beyond the horizon of this fleeting world. Let your heart long for what is with Allah — for that is the true success that never fades.
