Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Mala' (الملأ): The chiefs, leaders, and prominent figures of a people.
  • Arādhil (أَرَاذِل): The lowly, the poor, the weak in social standing — those considered inferior in rank and wealth.
  • Bādi al-Ra'y (بَادِيَ الرَّأْي): On the surface, without deep thought or reflection; an outward, hasty judgment.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) called his people to worship Allah alone, the arrogant chiefs and leaders of his people who rejected faith responded with a string of objections, trying to undermine his mission and belittle his followers. Their words reveal the timeless pattern of the privileged elite who oppose the truth simply because it challenges their status.

First, they said: "We see you are nothing but a human being like us." They could not conceive that Allah would choose a mere mortal to deliver His message, demanding instead an angel or someone of extraordinary appearance. This was not a sincere search for truth, but a flimsy excuse to reject the call — for they knew well that all prophets throughout history were human beings chosen by Allah.

Second, they sneered: "We see that none follow you except the lowest among us, and they follow you without even thinking." They looked down upon the believers — the poor, the weak, the servants — and used their social status as a reason to dismiss the message itself. They claimed the believers had joined Nuh impulsively, without reflection, yet it was the leaders themselves who refused to reflect at all. This is a sad reality: the wealthy and powerful often despise the truth when it comes from those they consider beneath them, forgetting that Allah judges by hearts and deeds, not by wealth or lineage.

Third, they said: "We do not see any superiority in you over us." They measured superiority by worldly standards — money, status, and influence — and found Nuh and his followers lacking. They failed to understand that true superiority lies in faith, righteousness, and closeness to Allah, not in material possessions.

Finally, they concluded: "Rather, we think you are liars." Having exhausted their arguments, they resorted to accusation and slander, attributing falsehood to the man who was the most truthful among them. This is the ultimate weapon of the arrogant: when they cannot refute the truth, they attack the character of the one who brings it.

A Call to Reflection:

This scene from the life of Nuh (peace be upon him) is not merely history — it is a mirror for every generation. How often do we reject guidance because we dislike the messenger? How often do we look down upon sincere believers because of their social standing? How often do we measure people's worth by their wealth rather than their piety?

The Quran presents this story to teach us a profound lesson: truth is not determined by the status of its bearers, and faith is not measured by worldly rank. The believers whom the chiefs despised were, in Allah's sight, the most honorable of their people. Their simple faith, untainted by arrogance, was far more precious than the hollow pride of the elite.

Dear reader — when you hear the call of truth, do not ask "Who is calling?" but rather "What is being said?" Do not turn away from guidance because it comes from someone you consider lesser than yourself. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Allah does not look at your forms or your wealth, but He looks at your hearts and your deeds." (Muslim)

Let the arrogance of Nuh's people be a warning for us all. For they rejected the truth, and what followed was the flood that drowned them — while the humble believers were saved. May Allah protect us from the pride that blinds, and grant us the humility that opens our hearts to His guidance.

📜 Verse 25-29 — Hud

And We had certainly sent Noah to his people, [saying], "Indeed, I am to you a clear warner
That you not worship except Allah. Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a painful day."

He said, "O my people have you considered: if I should be upon clear evidence from my Lord while He has given me mercy from Himself but it has been made unapparent to you, should we force it upon you while you are averse to it?
And O my people, I ask not of you for it any wealth. My reward is not but from Allah. And I am not one to drive away those who have believed. Indeed, they will meet their Lord, but I see that you are a people behaving ignorantly.
