Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • An lā taʿbudū – "That you worship not" – the command to devote all acts of worship exclusively to Allah.
  • Illā Allāh – "Except Allah" – singling out Allah alone for worship, with no partners or intermediaries.
  • Akḥāfu ʿalaykum – "I fear for you" – the prophet’s sincere concern and warning out of compassion for his people.
  • ʿAdhāba yawmin alīm – "The punishment of a painful day" – referring to the Day of Resurrection, described as painful because of the severe torment that will befall the disbelievers.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, the Prophet Nūḥ (peace be upon him) conveys the core message of all prophets to his people: that they must worship Allah alone, without associating any partner with Him. This is the essence of Tawḥīd (monotheism) – the foundation of Islam. He does not merely inform them of this command; he accompanies it with a heartfelt warning, expressing his genuine fear for their fate if they persist in disbelief. The "painful day" he refers to is the Day of Judgment, a day when the reality of one’s deeds will be laid bare, and the punishment for those who rejected Allah’s oneness will be severe and unrelenting. His words carry both mercy and severity: mercy in his desire to save them from destruction, and severity in the clarity of the consequence they face. This reflects the balance of a true caller to Allah – one who combines hope and fear, gentleness and firmness, to guide people toward the path of salvation.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse is not merely a historical account; it is a timeless message directed at every soul. Allah sent prophets to every nation with the same call: to purify your worship and direct it solely to Him. Today, this call reaches you through the Qur’an. Ask yourself: Is my heart devoted to Allah alone? Do I seek His pleasure in my actions, or do I let worldly desires and distractions take His place? The warning of that painful day is not meant to frighten you without purpose – it is a mercy from Allah, urging you to turn back to Him before it is too late. The door of repentance is open, and Allah’s forgiveness is vast. Do not delay, for tomorrow may be too late. Embrace the beauty of Tawḥīd, and you will find peace in this life and safety in the Hereafter. Let this verse be a reminder that the greatest success lies in submitting to the One who created you, and the greatest loss is to meet Him while having turned away from His call.

📜 Verse 24-28 — Hud

The example of the two parties is like the blind and deaf, and the seeing and hearing. Are they equal in comparison? Then, will you not remember?
And We had certainly sent Noah to his people, [saying], "Indeed, I am to you a clear warner
That you not worship except Allah. Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a painful day."
So the eminent among those who disbelieved from his people said, "We do not see you but as a man like ourselves, and we do not see you followed except by those who are the lowest of us [and] at first suggestion. And we do not see in you over us any merit; rather, we think you are liars."
He said, "O my people have you considered: if I should be upon clear evidence from my Lord while He has given me mercy from Himself but it has been made unapparent to you, should we force it upon you while you are averse to it?
