Key Words and Phrases:

  • Nāqat Allāh (ناقة الله): The she-camel of Allah, a miraculous creature created by His command as a sign.
  • Āyah (آية): A sign, proof, or miracle demonstrating the truth of the prophet’s message.
  • Tadharihā (فذروها): Leave her alone; do not interfere with her.
  • Bi-sū’ (بسوء): With harm, injury, or evil intent — specifically referring to harming or killing her.
  • ʿAdhāb qarīb (عذاب قريب): A punishment that is near at hand, coming swiftly after the transgression.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Prophet Salih (peace be upon him) addresses his people with gentleness and compassion, saying: "O my people! This she-camel of Allah is a sign for you." The people of Thamud had demanded a miracle to prove his prophethood, and Allah, in His wisdom and mercy, brought forth a unique she-camel from a solid rock — a living, breathing miracle that stood as a clear evidence of Salih’s truthfulness and Allah’s absolute power.

Salih then instructs them: "Leave her to graze on Allah’s earth." This was not merely a command but a test — a test of their obedience, patience, and respect for Allah’s creation. The she-camel required no provision from them; she ate from the earth that Allah had made lush for her, and she drank from the well on alternate days, as mentioned in other verses. This arrangement was a divine mercy, allowing the people to witness the miracle daily without burden.

Then comes the stern warning: "Do not touch her with harm, lest a near punishment seize you." The prohibition was absolute — no injury, no cruelty, no killing. The punishment promised was not distant or uncertain; it was "near," meaning it would follow swiftly upon their transgression. This was a final opportunity for the people of Thamud to reflect, repent, and believe before the inevitable consequence of their defiance.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer and seeker of truth. Allah’s signs are all around us — in the heavens, the earth, and within ourselves — each one calling us to recognize His greatness and submit to His will. The she-camel was a manifestation of Allah’s mercy, a visible proof that left no excuse for disbelief. Yet, the tragedy of Thamud was their arrogance: they saw the sign, understood its significance, but chose to reject it out of pride and stubbornness.

How often do we, too, witness Allah’s blessings and signs, yet fail to respond with gratitude and obedience? The verse reminds us that Allah’s mercy is always extended before His punishment. He gives us time, sends us reminders, and opens doors of guidance — but when the truth is clear and we still turn away, the consequence becomes inevitable.

Let this verse inspire you to look at the world with the eyes of faith. Every blessing you enjoy — your health, your sustenance, your very breath — is a sign from Allah, a call to draw closer to Him. Do not be like those who saw the miracle yet hardened their hearts. Instead, be among those who respond to Allah’s signs with humility, gratitude, and submission, for His mercy is vast, and His guidance is the greatest treasure one can attain.

📜 Verse 62-66 — Hud

They said, "O Salih, you were among us a man of promise before this. Do you forbid us to worship what our fathers worshipped? And indeed we are, about that to which you invite us, in disquieting doubt."
He said, "O my people, have you considered: if I should be upon clear evidence from my Lord and He has given me mercy from Himself, who would protect me from Allah if I disobeyed Him? So you would not increase me except in loss.
And O my people, this is the she-camel of Allah - [she is] to you a sign. So let her feed upon Allah 's earth and do not touch her with harm, or you will be taken by an impending punishment."
But they hamstrung her, so he said, "Enjoy yourselves in your homes for three days. That is a promise not to be denied."
So when Our command came, We saved Salih and those who believed with him, by mercy from Us, and [saved them] from the disgrace of that day. Indeed, it is your Lord who is the Powerful, the Exalted in Might.
