Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • ʿAqarūhā (فَعَقَرُوهَا): They hamstrung and slaughtered the she-camel, cutting its tendons and killing it in the most brutal manner.
  • Tamattaʿū (تَمَتَّعُوا): Enjoy yourselves, take pleasure in life.
  • Dārikum (دَارِكُمْ): Your land, your homes, your place of residence.
  • Ghayru makdhūb (غَيْرُ مَكْذُوبٍ): Not a lie, not false, something that will inevitably come to pass.

Explanation of the Verse:

After the people of Thamud rejected the signs of Allah and refused to believe in their prophet Salih (peace be upon him), they went even further in their arrogance and disbelief. They hamstrung the blessed she-camel that Allah had sent as a miraculous sign for them, despite all the warnings they had received. This act was not merely the killing of an animal—it was a direct challenge to the power of Allah and a deliberate rejection of His messenger.

At that moment, Prophet Salih (peace be upon him) addressed them with a calm yet firm declaration: "Enjoy yourselves in your land for three days." This was not a concession or a withdrawal of the divine decree—it was a final respite, a short period given to them so that they might reflect, repent, and turn back to Allah before the punishment descended upon them. It was a mercy wrapped in a warning, for Allah does not destroy a people until His proof has been established against them and they have been given every opportunity to mend their ways.

Then Salih (peace be upon him) added: "That is a promise not to be denied." Meaning, this promise of punishment after three days is a true and certain promise from Allah—it will undoubtedly come to pass, and no power on earth can prevent it or delay it. It is not an empty threat or a mere warning; it is a decree that has been written and will be fulfilled.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this story. How often do we, like the people of Thamud, receive clear signs from Allah—through His verses, through His creation, through the events of our lives—yet we turn away in arrogance or neglect? How often do we take the respite that Allah grants us as a sign of His indifference, when in truth it is a sign of His mercy and patience?

Allah gives us time, just as He gave them three days, not because He is unaware or weak, but because He loves for His servants to return to Him. Every breath we take is a gift, every day that passes is an opportunity to correct our course. Do not let the days of your life pass by in heedlessness, for the promise of Allah is true—whether it be the promise of reward for the righteous or the promise of punishment for the wicked.

Let this verse be a reminder that Allah's patience is vast, but His justice is certain. The door of repentance is open until the very last moment, but once the decree is sealed, no one can turn it back. So hasten to your Lord, purify your hearts, and live your life in obedience to Him, so that you may be among those who are saved, not among those who are destroyed.

📜 Verse 63-67 — Hud

He said, "O my people, have you considered: if I should be upon clear evidence from my Lord and He has given me mercy from Himself, who would protect me from Allah if I disobeyed Him? So you would not increase me except in loss.
And O my people, this is the she-camel of Allah - [she is] to you a sign. So let her feed upon Allah 's earth and do not touch her with harm, or you will be taken by an impending punishment."
But they hamstrung her, so he said, "Enjoy yourselves in your homes for three days. That is a promise not to be denied."
So when Our command came, We saved Salih and those who believed with him, by mercy from Us, and [saved them] from the disgrace of that day. Indeed, it is your Lord who is the Powerful, the Exalted in Might.
And the shriek seized those who had wronged, and they became within their homes [corpses] fallen prone
