Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Yusuf: The Prophet Joseph (peace be upon him), son of Prophet Ya'qub (Jacob).
  • His brother: Benyamin (Benjamin), the full brother of Yusuf.
  • Jahilun: Those who are ignorant, lacking knowledge of the consequences and gravity of their actions.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When Yusuf (peace be upon him) heard his brothers' words of distress and need—how they had come seeking provisions, humbled by hunger and hardship—his heart softened with mercy toward them. He could no longer contain himself, and so he revealed his identity to them, saying: "Do you now recall what you did to Yusuf and his brother? When you separated him from his father, threw him into the well, sold him as a slave, and then brought his shirt stained with false blood to deceive your grieving father—and when you took his brother away from him out of jealousy and spite—all of that was done while you were ignorant of its evil consequences and unaware of the greatness of the sin you were committing."

He did not say this to shame them or to gloat over his position of power, but rather to awaken their consciences and lead them to sincere repentance. By reminding them of their past, he opened the door for them to acknowledge their wrongdoing—and indeed, they did, saying: "Are you indeed Yusuf?" And when he confirmed it, they witnessed the beautiful character of a man who, despite all the harm they had caused him, chose mercy over revenge.

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: the one who has been wronged can rise above his pain and respond with forgiveness and wisdom. Yusuf (peace be upon him) did not seek retribution when he had the power to do so; instead, he used the moment to guide his brothers toward self-awareness and repentance. How beautiful is the character of the believer who, when he is able to punish, chooses to pardon—and when he is able to humiliate, chooses to honor!

And note the phrase "when you were ignorant"—for ignorance is not an excuse for sin, but it is a mitigating factor that opens the door to repentance. The one who sins out of ignorance can be forgiven if he turns back to Allah in sincerity. This is a mercy from Allah, for He knows the weakness of His servants and accepts their repentance when they return to Him.

Let this verse inspire you, dear reader: no matter how deep the wounds of the past, forgiveness is a strength, not a weakness. And no matter how great the sin, Allah's mercy is greater. Turn to Him, and He will turn to you—just as Yusuf turned to his brothers with compassion, and just as Allah turned to Yusuf with honor and victory after years of trials.

📜 Verse 87-91 — Yusuf

O my sons, go and find out about Joseph and his brother and despair not of relief from Allah. Indeed, no one despairs of relief from Allah except the disbelieving people."
So when they entered upon Joseph, they said, "O 'Azeez, adversity has touched us and our family, and we have come with goods poor in quality, but give us full measure and be charitable to us. Indeed, Allah rewards the charitable."
He said, "Do you know what you did with Joseph and his brother when you were ignorant?"
They said, "Are you indeed Joseph?" He said "I am Joseph, and this is my brother. Allah has certainly favored us. Indeed, he who fears Allah and is patient, then indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good."
They said, "By Allah, certainly has Allah preferred you over us, and indeed, we have been sinners."
