Word Meanings:
- Salāmun ʿalaykum: Peace be upon you; a greeting of safety and security.
- Bimā ṣabartum: Because of what you patiently endured — referring to their steadfastness in obedience to Allah, patience in facing hardships, and restraint from sin.
- Fa niʿma ʿuqba al-dār: Excellent indeed is the final abode — meaning Paradise, the ultimate reward.
Tafsir (Interpretation):
The angels greet the people of Paradise with the words: "Peace be upon you" — a declaration that they are safe from every harm, fear, and sorrow. This greeting is given as a reward for their patience: patience in obeying Allah's commands despite difficulty, patience in refraining from what He forbade despite desire, and patience in accepting His decrees even when they were hard to bear. The angels say, in essence: "You endured the hardships of this world and the struggles of faith, so now you have earned eternal tranquility." Then they add: "How excellent is the final abode!" — meaning that Paradise, with all its bliss and everlasting joy, is the most perfect outcome for those who remained steadfast.
This verse carries a profound lesson: the trials of this life are temporary, but the reward for patience is everlasting. The believers who persevere through the challenges of faith — whether facing persecution, poverty, illness, or the inner struggle against sin — will find that every difficulty they endured was worth it when they hear this blessed greeting from the angels. The phrase "peace be upon you" here is not merely a salutation; it is a divine assurance of complete safety: safety from the punishment of Hell, safety from regret, safety from the end of blessings, and safety from all that could cause distress.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Imagine the moment when, after a lifetime of trials and tribulations, you enter Paradise and the angels themselves come to welcome you with words of peace and honor. They acknowledge your patience — the very quality that seemed so hard to maintain in moments of weakness. This verse is a beautiful reminder that Allah never wastes the efforts of His servants. Every tear shed in fear of Him, every act of obedience performed against one's desires, every moment of restraint from sin — all of it is recorded and will be rewarded beyond imagination. So take heart, dear believer: your patience today is not in vain. The final abode is not merely good; it is excellent, beyond what any eye has seen, any ear has heard, or any heart has conceived. Let this verse inspire you to persevere, for the greeting of the angels awaits those who endure.
