Explanation of the Verse:
This verse is part of Prophet Moses' address to the Children of Israel, reminding them of a profound divine declaration. Allah, through His prophet, made a solemn and emphatic announcement to them: "If you are grateful, I will surely increase you." This is a universal, timeless promise from the Lord of all worlds—gratitude is the key that unlocks an endless flow of divine blessings. When a servant recognizes Allah's favors, acknowledges them with the heart, praises Him with the tongue, and uses those blessings in ways that please Him, Allah responds by increasing that servant in goodness, provision, knowledge, peace, and spiritual elevation. Gratitude is not merely a word; it is a lifestyle of obedience and contentment that attracts more of Allah's mercy and bounty.
The verse then presents the contrasting warning: "But if you are ungrateful, indeed My punishment is severe." Ungratefulness here means denying Allah's favors, attributing them to other than Him, or using them in disobedience. This ingratitude is not just a missed opportunity for increase—it invites a severe consequence. The severity of Allah's punishment is a reflection of His justice and the immense value of the blessings He bestows. When a person rejects the source of all goodness and rebels against the One who sustains them, they cut themselves off from divine mercy and open the door to hardship in this life and the next.
This verse carries a beautiful and encouraging message for every believer: no matter how much you have, gratitude multiplies it. And no matter how little you have, gratitude transforms it into a source of barakah (blessed increase). The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us that gratitude is a treasure that never diminishes. When you wake up each morning and thank Allah for your sight, your health, your family, and your faith, you are activating this divine promise of increase. The more you thank, the more you receive—and the more you receive, the more reasons you find to thank. It is a beautiful cycle of love and generosity between the servant and the Lord.
So, dear reader, let this verse be a daily reminder: your gratitude is never wasted. It is heard by the One who promised to increase you. And your ingratitude is never hidden—it is seen by the One whose punishment is severe. Choose gratitude, and watch how Allah opens doors of provision and peace you never imagined. This is the way of the successful, the path of the grateful, and the promise of the Most Generous.
