Key Words and Phrases:

  • "Al (آل) Fir'awn": The family, followers, and establishment of Pharaoh.
  • "Yasoomoonakum soo'a al-'adhab": They are making you taste the most severe and evil form of punishment.
  • "Yastahyoona nisa'akum": They keep your women alive, sparing them from slaughter but subjecting them to humiliation and servitude.
  • "Balaa'": A trial, test, or tribulation—here it refers to both the affliction itself and the divine test of patience embedded within it.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah instructs His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to remind his people—and by extension all of humanity—of the story of Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) when he addressed the Children of Israel. Musa called upon his people to remember the immense favor of Allah upon them. This favor was their deliverance from the clutches of Pharaoh and his regime, who had subjected them to the most horrific forms of torture and humiliation.

Pharaoh's tyranny was systematic and cruel. His forces would slaughter the newborn male sons of the Israelites, fearing that one of them would rise and challenge his kingship. Meanwhile, they would spare the women, not out of mercy, but to degrade them, force them into servitude, and use them as a means of humiliation for the entire community. This was a continuous, unbearable affliction that tested the very fabric of their faith and endurance.

Yet, in the midst of this darkness, Allah's mercy shone through. He answered the prayers of the oppressed and saved them from Pharaoh's tyranny, parting the sea and drowning their oppressors. This was not merely a rescue; it was a profound demonstration of divine power and a reward for their patience through a trial that was truly great. The verse closes by stating that in this entire ordeal—both the suffering and the salvation—there was a tremendous test from the Lord, a test that purified them, strengthened their faith, and demonstrated that Allah is ever-watchful over His believing servants.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a timeless message for every believer. It teaches us that hardship is often a precursor to divine relief. When you face trials in your own life, remember that Allah is testing you to elevate your rank and to draw you closer to Him. Just as the Children of Israel were saved after immense suffering, your patience in the face of adversity will be rewarded in ways you cannot imagine. Let this story fill your heart with hope and gratitude. Thank Allah for the blessings you have today—your safety, your faith, and your family—and remember that no trial is permanent. The same Allah who saved Musa and his people is alive and capable of saving you from every difficulty. So, hold firm to your trust in Him, and let gratitude be your constant companion, for Allah loves those who remember His favors and remain patient through His tests.

📜 Verse 4-8 — Ibrahim

And We did not send any messenger except [speaking] in the language of his people to state clearly for them, and Allah sends astray [thereby] whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
And We certainly sent Moses with Our signs, [saying], "Bring out your people from darknesses into the light and remind them of the days of Allah." Indeed in that are signs for everyone patient and grateful.
And [recall, O Children of Israel], when Moses said to His people, "Remember the favor of Allah upon you when He saved you from the people of Pharaoh, who were afflicting you with the worst torment and were slaughtering your [newborn] sons and keeping your females alive. And in that was a great trial from your Lord.
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.' "
And Moses said, "If you should disbelieve, you and whoever is on the earth entirely - indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy."
