  • Ad-Dam (الدم): The blood that flows from the animal when slaughtered.
  • Lahm al-Khinzir (لحم الخنزير): The flesh of the pig, including all its parts.

  • UdTurra (اضطر): One who is compelled by extreme necessity, such as the fear of death from severe hunger.
  • Ghayra baghin (غير باغ): Not seeking the forbidden out of desire or craving for it when permissible alternatives exist.
  • Wa la 'adin (ولا عاد): Not transgressing the limits of necessity, i.e., eating only what suffices to keep life, not exceeding that amount.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah, the Most Merciful, clarifies for His servants what He has forbidden for their own well-being and protection. He says: "He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah."

These four categories are the core prohibitions from the animal kingdom:

  1. Dead animals — those that die without proper Islamic slaughter, whether by natural death, strangulation, a blow, a fall, or being gored by another animal.
  2. Blood — the flowing blood that is poured out when an animal is slaughtered, which is harmful to consume.
  3. The flesh of swine (pig) — all parts of the pig are forbidden, as it is an impure animal that causes harm to the body and soul.
  4. That which is dedicated to other than Allah — any animal slaughtered while invoking the name of a false deity, idol, prophet, saint, or any being other than Allah Almighty. This is because such an act involves associating partners with Allah (shirk), which is the greatest sin.

However, Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, does not leave His servants in hardship. He immediately follows the prohibition with an exception: "But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [the limit] — then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."

This means: If a person finds themselves in a life-threatening situation — such as extreme hunger with no permissible food available — and they eat from these forbidden things only to preserve their life, without seeking pleasure or craving the forbidden, and without exceeding the minimum amount needed to survive, then Allah's forgiveness encompasses them. He will not punish them for what they consumed, for He is Ghafoor (All-Forgiving) and Raheem (Most Merciful).

A Da'wah Reflection:

How beautiful is this religion of Islam! It is a religion of balance and mercy. Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear. He forbids what is harmful, yet opens the door of concession in times of genuine necessity. This teaches us that Islam is not a religion of extremism or hardship, but one that cares for the physical and spiritual well-being of every human being.

Imagine the depth of Allah's mercy: even in a state of consuming something forbidden, He provides a path to forgiveness and acceptance. This should fill our hearts with love for our Creator, who knows our weaknesses and circumstances. He does not want to punish us; He wants us to live, to thrive, and to turn to Him in every situation.

So, dear reader, embrace this divine guidance with gratitude. Know that every command of Allah carries wisdom and mercy. And if you ever find yourself in a difficult situation, remember that Allah's mercy is vast, and His door of forgiveness is always open for those who sincerely seek it. Let this verse be a reminder of His boundless compassion, and let it draw you closer to Him with trust and love.

📜 Verse 113-117 — An-Nahl

And there had certainly come to them a Messenger from among themselves, but they denied him; so punishment overtook them while they were wrongdoers.
Then eat of what Allah has provided for you [which is] lawful and good. And be grateful for the favor of Allah, if it is [indeed] Him that you worship.
He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit] - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
And do not say about what your tongues assert of untruth, "This is lawful and this is unlawful," to invent falsehood about Allah. Indeed, those who invent falsehood about Allah will not succeed.
[It is but] a brief enjoyment, and they will have a painful punishment.
