Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Phrases:
- تَوَلَّوْا (tawallaw): They turn away, withdraw, or reject after having heard the message.
- الْبَلَاغُ الْمُبِينُ (al-balāgh al-mubīn): The clear, manifest conveyance of the message — delivering the truth in a way that leaves no excuse for misunderstanding.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Messenger, if these people turn away from you after witnessing the clear signs and hearing the truth, do not let grief overwhelm your heart. Their rejection is not a failure on your part, nor does it diminish your mission. Your duty is not to force their hearts open or to compel their acceptance — that is not within your power. Your sole responsibility is to deliver the message with absolute clarity, to convey the truth in a way that leaves no room for ambiguity or excuse. You have done exactly that, and you have fulfilled your trust. As for guidance, it rests entirely with Allah alone — He guides whom He wills and leaves astray whom He wills, and He is perfectly just in both.
This verse carries a profound lesson of comfort and reassurance: the Prophet ﷺ is a warner and a bearer of glad tidings, not a controller of hearts. The burden of belief does not fall on his shoulders, nor does it fall on any caller to the truth. The believer’s duty is to speak the truth clearly, to present it with wisdom and beautiful admonition, and then to leave the outcome to Allah. This frees the Muslim from anxiety and despair when people reject the message, for the reward lies in the sincere effort of conveyance, not in the results that are beyond human control.
A Call to Reflection:
How beautiful is this divine reassurance! It teaches us that our role in this world is to be witnesses of truth, not judges of hearts. When you invite someone to goodness and they turn away, do not be disheartened — you have planted a seed, and Allah is the One who makes it grow. The Prophet ﷺ himself faced rejection from his own people, yet he remained steadfast, patient, and gentle, because he knew his duty was clear: to convey, and to convey beautifully. Let this be a source of strength for every Muslim who strives for the sake of Allah — your sincerity is known to your Lord, and your reward is with Him, whether people accept or refuse. So carry the message with love, deliver it with clarity, and leave the rest to the One who holds all hearts in His hands.
