Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Qaryah (قَرْيَةً): A town, city, or community — referring to its inhabitants collectively.
  • Mutrafīhā (مُتْرَفِيهَا): Its affluent, luxurious, and privileged leaders — those who have been given abundant wealth and comfort, and who hold influence over the rest.
  • Fasaqū (فَفَسَقُوا): They deviated and rebelled — they went out of obedience to Allah, committing sin and transgression.
  • Fa ḥaqqa ‘alayhā al-qawl (فَحَقَّ عَلَيْهَا الْقَوْلُ): The word (of punishment) became due and inevitable upon them — the divine decree of destruction was confirmed.
  • Dammarnāhā tadmīran (فَدَمَّرْنَاهَا تَدْمِيرًا): We utterly destroyed it — a complete and total annihilation leaving nothing intact.

The Explanation of the Verse:

When Allah, in His perfect wisdom and justice, wills the destruction of a community that has persisted in wrongdoing and corruption, His way is both profound and precise. He first addresses the most influential and privileged class among them — the wealthy, the comfortable, and the leaders of society. He commands them, through His messengers and the clear signs He sends, to submit to Him alone, to worship Him sincerely, and to follow His prophets. These leaders are given the greatest responsibility because they hold the greatest influence; had they believed, the common people would have followed them in goodness.

Yet, instead of responding with humility and obedience, these very leaders — who were blessed with ease and abundance as a test — turn away in arrogance. They reject the call, commit sins openly, and spread corruption throughout the land. Their rebellion is not merely personal; it becomes the defining character of the entire community, as the masses follow their example.

At that point, the divine decree of punishment becomes binding upon them. There is no escape, no delay, and no intercession that can avert it. Allah then brings upon them a destruction so complete that nothing of their civilization remains — their homes, their wealth, their power, and their very existence are wiped away. This is the ultimate consequence of persistent transgression after clear warning.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every individual and every society. It reminds us that privilege and comfort are not signs of divine favor alone — they are also tests. The more Allah gives you, the more He expects from you. The leaders of a community, whether in wealth, knowledge, or status, bear a heavy trust; their obedience to Allah brings blessings to all, while their corruption brings ruin to all.

Dear reader, look at your own life. Have you been given blessings — health, wealth, knowledge, or influence? Then know that these are not merely for your enjoyment; they are a responsibility. Use them to draw closer to Allah, to support the truth, and to guide others toward goodness. Do not be like those who, when commanded to obey, chose instead to rebel — for their end was utter destruction.

The door of repentance remains open for you today. Allah is Al-Ghafūr (The Most Forgiving) and Ar-Raḥīm (The Most Merciful). He delays punishment to give you time to return to Him. Do not let arrogance or attachment to this world harden your heart. Humble yourself before your Creator, follow His messengers, and be among those who bring light to their communities rather than darkness. For the One who destroyed the arrogant is the same One who loves to forgive the repentant — and His mercy is far greater than His wrath.

📜 Verse 14-18 — Al-Isra

[It will be said], "Read your record. Sufficient is yourself against you this Day as accountant."
Whoever is guided is only guided for [the benefit of] his soul. And whoever errs only errs against it. And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. And never would We punish until We sent a messenger.
And when We intend to destroy a city, We command its affluent but they defiantly disobey therein; so the word comes into effect upon it, and We destroy it with [complete] destruction.
And how many have We destroyed from the generations after Noah. And sufficient is your Lord, concerning the sins of His servants, as Acquainted and Seeing.
Whoever should desire the immediate - We hasten for him from it what We will to whom We intend. Then We have made for him Hell, which he will [enter to] burn, censured and banished.
