Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Al-Qurūn (الْقُرُونِ): Generations or nations; a "qarn" (century/generation) refers to a people living in a specific time period, often about a hundred years.
  • Ahlaknā (أَهْلَكْنَا): We destroyed or caused to perish — referring to divine punishment for persistent disbelief and sin.
  • Khabīran (خَبِيرًا): All-Aware, fully knowing the innermost details of all matters.
  • Baṣīran (بَصِيرًا): All-Seeing, witnessing everything that occurs, nothing escapes His sight.

The Interpretation:

How many nations did Allah destroy after the time of Prophet Nūḥ (Noah, peace be upon him)! Nations like ʿĀd and Thamūd — peoples who rejected their messengers, persisted in arrogance, and refused to turn back to their Lord. Their destruction was not an act of injustice, but a natural consequence of their own stubborn denial of the truth that had been made clear to them.

This verse carries a profound and sobering message: if those mighty nations — with their strength, wealth, and civilizations — could not escape Allah's punishment when they disobeyed, then no one else can either. The Qur'an reminds us that these nations were not weaker than us; rather, they were often stronger and more advanced in worldly terms. Yet their power did not protect them from the consequences of their sins.

The verse concludes with a powerful reassurance: "And sufficient is your Lord as All-Aware and All-Seeing of the sins of His servants." This means that Allah — Glorified and Exalted — knows every single sin, whether hidden in the depths of the heart or committed openly in public. Nothing escapes His knowledge, and nothing is hidden from His sight. He sees the wrongdoer in the darkness of the night and the believer striving in the light of day. He knows the secret intentions behind every action.

This is both a warning and a comfort. A warning for those who think they can hide their misdeeds from Allah — for He sees and knows all, and His justice is perfect. And a comfort for the believers who are oppressed or wronged — for their Lord is fully aware of the injustice done to them, and He will certainly settle accounts with perfect fairness.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, reflect on this verse deeply. The generations that came before us — where are they now? Their palaces have crumbled, their names have faded, and their power has vanished. But their deeds remain recorded with Allah, and they have met the outcome of their choices.

This should inspire us to examine our own lives. Allah's knowledge of our sins is not meant to frighten us into despair — rather, it is an invitation to return to Him before it is too late. The door of repentance is open, and Allah's mercy is vast. He knows every sin we have committed, yet He still gives us time to turn back to Him.

Let this verse be a reminder that we are never alone in our struggles, never unseen in our efforts, and never forgotten in our prayers. Allah sees the tears of the repentant, hears the whispers of the supplicant, and knows the sincerity of every heart that seeks Him. So turn to Him now, before the appointed time arrives, and let His awareness of your deeds be the very reason you choose righteousness over sin, and obedience over rebellion.

📜 Verse 15-19 — Al-Isra

Whoever is guided is only guided for [the benefit of] his soul. And whoever errs only errs against it. And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. And never would We punish until We sent a messenger.
And when We intend to destroy a city, We command its affluent but they defiantly disobey therein; so the word comes into effect upon it, and We destroy it with [complete] destruction.
And how many have We destroyed from the generations after Noah. And sufficient is your Lord, concerning the sins of His servants, as Acquainted and Seeing.
Whoever should desire the immediate - We hasten for him from it what We will to whom We intend. Then We have made for him Hell, which he will [enter to] burn, censured and banished.
But whoever desires the Hereafter and exerts the effort due to it while he is a believer - it is those whose effort is ever appreciated [by Allah].
