Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Dhurriyyah (ذُرِّيَّةَ): Offspring, descendants, or progeny.
- Hamalnā (حَمَلْنَا): We carried or transported (referring to loading them onto the ark).
- Shakūran (شَكُورًا): Exceptionally grateful, one who constantly and abundantly thanks Allah with the heart, tongue, and limbs.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah addresses the descendants of those who were saved and carried aboard the ark with Prophet Noah (peace be upon him), reminding them of this great blessing. This is a profound favor upon all of humanity, for every person on earth today descends from those who were rescued from the flood. The verse calls upon these descendants to reflect on this mercy and to respond with gratitude—not merely by words, but by worshipping Allah alone, obeying His commands, and avoiding shirk (associating partners with Him).
The verse then directs them to follow the example of Noah himself, describing him as "a servant most grateful." Noah’s gratitude was comprehensive: his heart was filled with appreciation, his tongue constantly praised Allah, and his limbs were devoted to righteous deeds. He was grateful in times of ease and in times of hardship, throughout his long mission of calling his people to monotheism. By highlighting Noah’s character, Allah teaches us that true gratitude is not a fleeting feeling but a way of life—a state of being that permeates every action and thought.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, consider this: you are the living proof of Allah’s mercy. Your very existence is a chain of blessings stretching back to that ark, to that moment of salvation. When you look in the mirror, you see the face of a survivor—a descendant of those whom Allah chose to carry through the storm. Does this not stir your heart to thank Him? Does it not move you to live a life worthy of that legacy?
Prophet Noah stood firm for centuries, calling his people with patience and wisdom, and his gratitude never wavered. He teaches us that gratitude is the key to unlocking more of Allah’s favors. When you thank Allah for the gift of Islam, for the air you breathe, for the food you eat, for the family you love—Allah promises to increase you. But gratitude is not passive; it is active. It means using your eyes to see His signs, your ears to hear His truth, your tongue to speak His praise, and your limbs to serve His creation.
Let the example of Noah inspire you to be among the grateful servants. Let your life be a testimony of thankfulness, so that when others see you, they see someone who truly appreciates the blessings of Allah. And remember, the greatest form of gratitude is to worship Allah alone, without any partner, and to follow the guidance He sent through His prophets—culminating in the final message of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This is the path of Noah, the path of all prophets, and the path that leads to eternal success.
