Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Kitab (الْكِتَابَ): The Book — here referring to the Torah (Tawrah), the divine scripture revealed to Prophet Musa (Moses), peace be upon him.
  • Hudan (هُدًى): Guidance — a source of direction, clarification, and moral and spiritual leadership.
  • Wakeel (وَكِيلًا): A guardian, trustee, or one to whom affairs are entrusted — implying a protector, lord, or deity.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this noble verse, Allah reminds us of His immense favor upon Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) and the Children of Israel, just as He honored Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with the miraculous journey of Al-Isra. Allah says: "And We gave Musa the Book" — meaning the Torah, a comprehensive divine revelation — "and made it a guidance for the Children of Israel." This guidance was not merely a set of rules; it was a luminous path that illuminated their hearts, clarified truth from falsehood, and directed them toward righteousness in every aspect of life.

The verse then captures the essence of that guidance with a profound command: "that you do not take besides Me a Wakeel." In other words, Allah instructed the Children of Israel — and by extension, all of humanity — to rely solely on Him, to entrust their affairs to Him alone, and never to appoint any other being as their guardian, protector, or object of worship. This is the core of Tawheed (monotheism): absolute dependence on Allah, the One who created, sustains, and manages all affairs.

This command carries a timeless lesson for every believer. When we place our trust in Allah alone — not in wealth, status, human leaders, or false deities — we find true peace and security. Allah is the ultimate Wakeel: He never abandons those who rely on Him, He never fails those who turn to Him, and His wisdom surpasses all else. The verse gently but firmly teaches us that any reliance on other than Allah is a form of spiritual misguidance, for no one else holds the power to benefit or harm, to give or withhold, except by His will.

Dear reader, reflect on this beautiful call: Allah, in His infinite mercy, does not merely prohibit — He invites us to a life of freedom from anxiety and fear. When you make Allah your Wakeel, you unburden your heart from the weight of worldly worries, knowing that the Creator of the heavens and the earth is managing your affairs in the best possible way. This is the essence of Islam: a complete surrender to the One who deserves all trust, all love, and all worship. Let this verse inspire you to renew your reliance on Allah today — for He is indeed the Best of Guardians, and His guidance is the light that never fades.
