Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse carries two profound commands that shape a believer's character and relationship with Allah and society.
First: The Sacred Trust of the Orphan's Wealth
Allah, the Most Merciful, commands: *"Do not approach the wealth of the orphan except with that which is best, until he reaches his full maturity."*
Notice the precise wording — Allah does not merely say "do not consume" or "do not take" the orphan's wealth; He says *"do not approach"* (lā taqrabū). This is a stronger prohibition that closes all doors to wrongdoing. It means: do not even come near it in a way that could lead to harm, because approaching the edge of a cliff often leads to falling off it.
The only permissible way to handle an orphan's wealth is with the best intention and action — investing it, growing it, preserving it, and protecting it from loss or waste. The guardian must act as a trustee, not an owner. This care continues until the orphan reaches the age of full maturity — both physical adulthood and sound judgment in managing wealth. At that point, the wealth must be handed over completely and willingly.
This command reflects the beautiful justice of Islam: the orphan is vulnerable, having lost his protector, so Allah Himself becomes his Protector. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) gave glad tidings: *"I and the one who cares for an orphan will be together in Paradise like this"* — and he held his index and middle fingers together. What an honor for those who guard the rights of the weak!
Second: The Covenant and Its Accountability
Allah then commands: *"And fulfill the covenant — indeed, the covenant will be asked about."*
This is a comprehensive command covering every promise and agreement: covenants with Allah — such as prayers, fasting, and obedience to His commands; and covenants with people — such as business contracts, marriage agreements, promises to friends, and commitments to family. A true believer is one who keeps his word, for a promise is a sacred bond.
The verse reminds us that on the Day of Judgment, every covenant will be questioned. Allah will ask: Did you fulfill what you promised? Did you honor your commitments? Those who fulfilled will be rewarded generously, and those who broke their promises will face consequences. This accountability is a powerful motivator to be people of integrity.
A Call to Reflection:
These two commands together build a society based on trust, justice, and responsibility. When we protect the vulnerable and honor our word, we create an environment where people feel secure and communities flourish. Islam elevates these values to acts of worship — caring for orphans is not merely charity, it is obedience to Allah; keeping promises is not just good manners, it is a matter of accountability before Allah.
Let us embrace these noble teachings with open hearts, knowing that every act of kindness toward an orphan and every fulfilled promise brings us closer to Allah's pleasure and His eternal reward. The path of Islam is a path of excellence — excellence in dealing with Allah, excellence in dealing with people, and excellence in safeguarding every trust placed in our hands.
