Explanation of the Verse:
In this powerful verse, Allah Almighty informs us of the command He gave to Satan after his rebellion and refusal to prostrate to Adam (peace be upon him). Allah granted Satan a limited respite until the Day of Judgment, and then He said to him: *"And entice whoever you can among them with your voice"* — meaning, use your call to misguidance, your whispers, and your invitations to sin to unsettle and lure away as many of Adam's descendants as you can. This voice includes every temptation, every doubt, and every evil suggestion that enters the heart and leads a person away from obedience to Allah.
Then Allah said: *"And gather against them with your cavalry and your infantry"* — meaning, mobilize all your resources and forces, whether they be the strong and swift like cavalry, or the slow and numerous like foot soldiers. This is a command for Satan to exhaust every effort and use every trick, deception, and strategy at his disposal to mislead humanity. Yet, in the very same verse, Allah reminds us that despite all this power granted to Satan, it is limited and constrained — for Allah says in another verse: *"Indeed, My servants — you have no authority over them"* (Al-Hijr: 42). The believers who sincerely rely on Allah are protected.
Allah then said: *"And share with them in wealth and children"* — meaning, Satan participates in people's wealth when they earn it through unlawful means such as usury (riba), bribery, theft, or fraud, and when they spend it in disobedience. He also shares in their children by tempting them toward adultery and fornication, by influencing the upbringing of children upon falsehood, by having them named with names that imply servitude to other than Allah, or by altering the natural faith that Allah instilled in every child. This is a profound reminder for parents to protect their children and raise them upon righteousness, for every child is born upon the natural disposition of Islam, and it is the parents who may deviate them.
Finally, Allah said: *"And promise them"* — meaning, Satan makes promises to his followers, promising them wealth, power, pleasure, and false hopes, and even promising them that there is no resurrection or accountability. But then Allah closes the verse with a decisive truth: *"But Satan does not promise them except delusion."* Every promise Satan makes is a lie, every hope he instills is false, and every dream he sells is nothing but a mirage that vanishes when its reality is revealed. On the Day of Judgment, Satan will openly disown his followers, saying: *"Indeed, I disbelieved in your association of me with Allah"* (Ibrahim: 22).
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, this verse is a wake-up call. It reveals to us the strategy of our enemy, so that we may be prepared and vigilant. Satan is not a myth; he is a real, active enemy who has been granted the ability to whisper and tempt. But his power is limited — he cannot force anyone to sin, and he has no authority over the sincere servants of Allah. The weapons we have against him are the remembrance of Allah, the recitation of the Qur'an, seeking refuge in Allah from his whispers, and surrounding ourselves with righteous company.
When you feel tempted to earn unlawful wealth, remember that Satan is sharing in that wealth with you. When you neglect the Islamic upbringing of your children, remember that Satan is sharing in them. When you follow false promises of temporary pleasure, remember that every promise of Satan is nothing but delusion and deception. But the promise of Allah is true: *"Whoever follows My guidance, there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve"* (Al-Baqarah: 38).
So hold firmly to the rope of Allah, and know that the victory belongs to the believers. The path of righteousness may be narrow, but it leads to eternal bliss, while the wide road of Satan leads only to regret and loss. Choose wisely, for your choice today determines your tomorrow — both in this world and the next.
