Key Words and Meanings:

  • أَعْيُنُهُمْ (their eyes): Here it refers to the inner vision, the eyes of the heart and insight (al-baṣīrah), not merely the physical eyes.
  • فِي غِطَاءٍ (in a cover/veil): A barrier or screen that prevents perception.
  • عَن ذِكْرِي (from My remembrance): From the Qur'an, faith, and the signs of Allah.
  • لَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ سَمْعًا (they could not bear to hear): They were unable to listen with acceptance; their deafness to the truth was so extreme that hearing it became impossible for them.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse describes the state of the disbelievers who are shown the punishment of Hell — those who, in their worldly life, had their inner eyes veiled from the remembrance of Allah. Their hearts and minds were sealed, so they could not perceive the signs of Allah in the universe, nor the verses of the Qur'an, nor the call of the messengers. The "cover" over their eyes was not physical blindness, but a spiritual blindness — a hardened heart and a deliberate turning away from the truth.

Furthermore, they "could not bear to hear" — meaning they were unable to listen to the words of Allah and His proofs with any acceptance or benefit. Their deafness was not of the ears, but of the soul; they had so thoroughly rejected the truth that even when it was recited to them, it found no place in their hearts. This was the result of their own persistent arrogance and refusal to reflect, until Allah sealed their hearts as a just consequence of their choices.

This verse serves as a profound warning: the ability to see the truth and hear the guidance is a blessing from Allah, but it can be lost through persistent sin and rejection. The Qur'an repeatedly calls upon people to open their hearts, to reflect, and to listen with sincerity — for the one who sincerely seeks the truth will find the path illuminated.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse is a gentle yet powerful reminder of the greatest gift a human being can possess: a heart that sees and ears that hear the truth. Allah has not placed a veil between Himself and His servants; rather, it is our own distractions, pride, and neglect that form the cover over our inner eyes. The Qur'an is not a book to be merely recited — it is a living light, a healing for what is in the chests, and a guide to the straight path.

Open your heart today. Turn to the Qur'an with sincerity, and you will find that the veils begin to lift. The One who created you is calling you to His remembrance — and there is no greater joy, no deeper peace, than answering that call. Do not let this life's fleeting pleasures blind you to the eternal truth. The door of repentance is open, and the mercy of Allah is vast. Seek Him now, before the day comes when the veils can no longer be removed, and the eyes that were blind in this world will see the reality they once denied.

📜 Verse 99-103 — Al-Kahf

And We will leave them that day surging over each other, and [then] the Horn will be blown, and We will assemble them in [one] assembly.
And We will present Hell that Day to the Disbelievers, on display -
Those whose eyes had been within a cover [removed] from My remembrance, and they were not able to hear.
Then do those who disbelieve think that they can take My servants instead of Me as allies? Indeed, We have prepared Hell for the disbelievers as a lodging.
Say, [O Muhammad], "Shall we [believers] inform you of the greatest losers as to [their] deeds?
