Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- اسْجُدُوا (usjudū): Prostrate as an act of honor and respect, not worship.
- فَسَقَ (fasaqa): He deviated, rebelled, and went out of obedience.
- أَوْلِيَاءَ (awliyā’): Allies, protectors, or close friends taken for support and guidance.
- بَدَلًا (badalan): An exchange or substitute.
Explanation of the Verse:
Remember, O Prophet, when your Lord declared to the angels: "Prostrate before Adam as a mark of honor and reverence." In perfect obedience, all the angels bowed down—except Iblis (Satan). He was not from the angels but from the jinn, and his pride and envy drove him to refuse. He broke away from his Lord’s command, choosing arrogance over submission.
Now, O people, reflect deeply: After all this, will you still take Iblis and his offspring as your allies and guardians instead of Me? Will you follow them, obey them, and seek their support—when they are your sworn enemies, working tirelessly to lead you astray? How foolish is such a choice! How evil is this exchange for those who wrong themselves—trading the protection of the Most Merciful for the enmity of the accursed!
A Call to Reflection:
This verse awakens the heart to a profound truth: Satan’s enmity toward humanity is not a secret—it is ancient, declared from the very beginning. He refused to honor Adam, and since then, he has vowed to mislead his descendants. Yet, despite this clear hostility, how many of us unknowingly befriend him by following his whispers, indulging in sin, and turning away from Allah’s guidance?
The believer who understands this verse realizes that true success lies in severing all ties with Satan and his allies—whether they be inner desires, harmful companions, or deceptive ideologies. Instead, we are invited to place our trust wholly in Allah, the One who created us, guided us, and promised us Paradise if we remain steadfast.
Let this be a reminder: Every act of obedience to Allah is a victory over Satan, and every moment of repentance is a step away from his trap. Do not let the enemy of your soul become your guide. Choose Allah as your Protector, for He is the Best of Guardians, and His reward is eternal bliss.
