📖 English Meaning
Those who do not know say, "Why does Allah not speak to us or there come to us a sign?" Thus spoke those before them like their words. Their hearts resemble each other. We have shown clearly the signs to a people who are certain [in faith].

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Lawla" (لَوْلَا): Why not / If only — used here as a word of reproach and stubborn demand.
  • "Ayatun" (آيَةٌ): A sign, miracle, or clear proof.
  • "Tashābahat" (تَشَابَهَتْ): Became alike or similar.
  • "Yūqinūn" (يُوقِنُونَ): Those who have certain, unwavering faith.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Those who lack true knowledge — the ignorant among the People of the Book and the polytheists — said to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) out of stubbornness and arrogance: "Why does Allah not speak to us directly, without a messenger, to tell us that you are truly His prophet? Or why does a specific miracle not come to us, tailored to our own demand, as proof of your truthfulness?"

This is not a new or unique demand. Allah tells us that nations before them said exactly the same thing to their prophets — the same words, the same tone, the same obstinate attitude. Though their times and places differed, their hearts were alike: hardened in disbelief, blinded by arrogance, and unwilling to submit to the truth even when it was clear.

Allah responds to this by stating that He has already made the signs and proofs abundantly clear. The Qur'an itself, with its miraculous nature, the prophecies it contains, and the guidance it brings, is the greatest sign. The previous prophets came with miracles, and yet their people still disbelieved. The issue was never a lack of evidence — it was a lack of sincere intention to seek the truth.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and reflect: when a person truly wants to find the truth, Allah guides them to it. The signs of Allah are all around us — in the heavens, in the earth, in our own creation, and in the revelation of the Qur'an. But those who demand signs while closing their hearts to the signs already before them will never be satisfied. No miracle would convince them, because their problem is not intellectual — it is spiritual.

The verse ends with a beautiful and profound statement: "We have made the signs clear for people who are certain." This means that the clarity of Allah's signs is a mercy reserved for those who approach them with sincerity, humility, and a genuine desire to know the truth. When your heart is open, every verse of the Qur'an, every moment of reflection, and every aspect of creation becomes a sign pointing to Allah.

So ask yourself: Are you among those who seek with certainty? If so, open your heart to the Qur'an, and you will find in it answers, guidance, and light that no miracle could ever match. The greatest sign is already in your hands — read it, understand it, and let it transform your life.

📜 Verse 116-120 — Al-Baqarah

They say, "Allah has taken a son." Exalted is He! Rather, to Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. All are devoutly obedient to Him,
Originator of the heavens and the earth. When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, "Be," and it is.
Those who do not know say, "Why does Allah not speak to us or there come to us a sign?" Thus spoke those before them like their words. Their hearts resemble each other. We have shown clearly the signs to a people who are certain [in faith].
Indeed, We have sent you, [O Muhammad], with the truth as a bringer of good tidings and a warner, and you will not be asked about the companions of Hellfire.
And never will the Jews or the Christians approve of you until you follow their religion. Say, "Indeed, the guidance of Allah is the [only] guidance." If you were to follow their desires after what has come to you of knowledge, you would have against Allah no protector or helper.
