Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Baladan Āminā": A secure, safe land where fear is absent.
  • "Thamarāt": Fruits and produce of all kinds.
  • "Umatti'hu": I will grant him enjoyment and provision.
  • "Aḍṭarruhu": I will compel and drive him inevitably.
  • "Al-Maṣīr": The final destination and ultimate return.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Remember, O Prophet, when Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), peace be upon him, raised his hands in sincere supplication to his Lord, saying: "My Lord, make this city (Makkah) a land of safety and security, where fear has no place, and where peace prevails for its inhabitants. And provide its people with fruits and provisions of all kinds." He made this dua because Makkah was, at that time, a barren valley with no cultivation or water — a place where survival itself was a challenge. Yet, with unwavering faith, Ibrahim asked Allah to transform it into a blessed sanctuary.

He specifically prayed for provision for those among its people who believe in Allah and the Last Day — the believers who worship Allah alone and look forward to the Hereafter with hope and reverence. This shows the depth of Ibrahim's love for the believers and his concern for their well-being in both worlds.

Allah, the Most High, responded to His beloved friend: "And whoever disbelieves — I will grant him enjoyment for a little while." This is a manifestation of Allah's immense mercy and justice. Even the disbeliever is not deprived of provision in this world; Allah gives him sustenance, health, and worldly pleasures for a short, fleeting time. But this is not the end — "then I will compel him to the punishment of the Fire." On the Day of Judgment, the disbeliever will be driven, unwilling and helpless, to the torment of Hellfire. And what an evil destination that is!

A Call to Reflection:

This verse teaches us a profound lesson about the nature of this worldly life. The pleasures of this world, no matter how abundant, are but a brief moment compared to the eternal life to come. Allah grants provision to both the believer and the disbeliever in this world, but the ultimate difference lies in the Hereafter. The believer's reward is everlasting bliss in Paradise, while the disbeliever's temporary enjoyment will be followed by eternal regret.

Dear reader, let this beautiful supplication of Ibrahim inspire you. He did not ask for wealth or power for himself — he asked for security and provision for the sake of faith. He prioritized the believers' welfare and trusted Allah's wisdom in dealing with all people. This is the hallmark of true faith: to care for others, to seek the good of the community, and to place complete trust in Allah's justice and mercy.

And remember — the security and provision that Makkah enjoys to this day, with millions of pilgrims visiting it annually from every corner of the earth, is a living answer to this blessed dua of Ibrahim. It stands as a testament to the power of sincere supplication and the truth of Allah's promises. So turn to Allah with your own duas, and trust that He hears and answers — for He is the Provider, the Protector, and the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.
