Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Fadhkuruni" (فَاذْكُرُونِي): Remember Me — this includes remembrance of Allah through the heart (such as reflecting on His greatness), through the tongue (such as glorifying, praising, and supplicating to Him), and through the limbs (by obeying His commands and avoiding His prohibitions).
- "Adhkurkum" (أَذْكُرْكُمْ): I will remember you — meaning Allah will mention you with praise and mercy in the highest assembly (the angels' gathering in the heavens), and He will protect, guide, and grant you success.
- "Washkuru li" (وَاشْكُرُوا لِي): And be grateful to Me — gratitude expressed through the heart (acknowledging Allah's favors), through the tongue (praising Him for His blessings), and through the limbs (using His blessings in obedience to Him).
- "Wa la takfurun" (وَلَا تَكْفُرُونِ): And do not be ungrateful to Me — meaning do not deny My favors, nor use them in disobedience, nor attribute them to other than Me.
The Tafsir (Explanation):
In this noble verse, Allah addresses His believing servants with a command that carries within it a magnificent promise and a profound honor. He says: *"Remember Me, and I will remember you."* This is an invitation from the Most Merciful to His servants — a call to keep their hearts connected to Him at all times. When you remember Allah through your heart with love and reverence, through your tongue with dhikr (remembrance) and supplication, and through your limbs by walking in obedience to Him, then Allah — glory be to Him — will remember you in a manner that befits His majesty. He will mention you in the highest heavens among the angels, praise you in His divine presence, and shower you with His protection, mercy, and forgiveness.
The verse then continues: *"And be grateful to Me, and do not be ungrateful to Me."* Gratitude (shukr) is the natural response to the countless blessings Allah has bestowed upon you — the breath you take, the health you enjoy, the faith in your heart, and the guidance you have received. True gratitude is not merely saying "Alhamdulillah" with your tongue; it is living a life that reflects your appreciation. When you use your eyes to read the Qur'an, your ears to listen to beneficial knowledge, your wealth to help the needy, and your time in acts of worship — that is gratitude in action. And the opposite of gratitude is kufr (ingratitude), which is to deny Allah's favors, to act as if you owe Him nothing, or to use His blessings in ways that displease Him.
This verse beautifully teaches us that the reward for remembering Allah is that He remembers us — and what could be greater than being remembered by the Lord of the worlds? When you are remembered by a king, you feel honored; when you are remembered by Allah, you are elevated beyond measure. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) conveyed to us that Allah says: *"I am as My servant thinks of Me, and I am with him when he remembers Me. If he remembers Me in himself, I remember him in Myself; and if he mentions Me in an assembly, I mention him in a better assembly."* (Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim).
So, dear believer, let this verse be a daily reminder: your remembrance of Allah is not for His benefit — He is Self-Sufficient and free of all needs. Rather, it is for your own elevation, your own peace, and your own salvation. When your heart is filled with the remembrance of Allah, it finds tranquility, as Allah says elsewhere: *"Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest"* (Ar-Ra'd 13:28). And when you are grateful, Allah promises to increase you in His blessings: *"If you are grateful, I will surely give you more"* (Ibrahim 14:7).
Let this verse inspire you to make dhikr a constant companion in your day — in the morning and evening, before eating and after, while walking and while working. And let gratitude be your attitude toward every single blessing, no matter how small. For the one who remembers Allah will find Allah remembering him with mercy, and the one who is grateful will find his blessings multiplied beyond imagination. This is the path of the successful, the way of the righteous, and the key to eternal happiness in this life and the Hereafter.
