Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Talbisū (تَلْبِسُوا): To mix, blend, or confuse one thing with another so that they become indistinguishable.
  • Al-Haqq (الْحَقَّ): The truth; here, it refers to the divine truth revealed by Allah, including the descriptions of the final Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) found in their scriptures.
  • Al-Bāṭil (الْبَاطِل): Falsehood; the fabricated distortions and alterations they introduced into their texts.
  • Taktumū (تَكْتُمُوا): To conceal or hide something deliberately.
  • Wa antum taʿlamūn (وَأَنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ): While you know — indicating that their concealment was not out of ignorance but out of willful defiance.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this profound verse, Allah addresses the People of the Book — the Jews and Christians of that era — with a direct and loving admonition, calling them to integrity and honesty. He commands them: "Do not mix the truth with falsehood." This means they should not blend the authentic revelations from Allah with the distortions, fabrications, and alterations they had introduced into their scriptures. The truth is pure and luminous; falsehood is dark and corrupt. Mixing them only creates confusion and misleads the people, which is a grave injustice.

Allah then adds: "And do not conceal the truth while you know it." This is a powerful call to transparency. The truth referred to here is the clear description of the final Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him), which was present in their original scriptures — the Torah and the Gospel. They knew his attributes, his lineage, and the signs of his coming, yet they hid these facts out of envy, pride, and fear of losing their worldly status and influence.

The verse closes with the piercing phrase: "While you know." This removes any excuse of ignorance. They were not acting out of misunderstanding; they knew the truth in their hearts and still chose to conceal it. This is a severe spiritual condition — knowingly suppressing the light of guidance.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse is not merely a historical rebuke; it is a timeless lesson for every soul. It teaches us that truth is sacred and must never be compromised, diluted, or hidden for personal gain. As Muslims, we are called to be people of honesty and clarity — in our words, our dealings, and our faith. We must never mix the pure teachings of Islam with cultural innovations or personal desires, and we must never conceal the beauty of this religion out of fear or worldly interest.

Moreover, this verse invites us to appreciate the continuity of divine revelation. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was not a new messenger with a new religion; he was the final link in a chain of prophets, all calling to the same truth: submission to the One God. The earlier scriptures pointed to his coming, and the Qur'an confirms and completes that message. When we understand this, our hearts open to the unity of all divine guidance, and we see Islam as the fulfillment of God's mercy to humanity.

Let us, therefore, be among those who uphold the truth openly, who never mix it with falsehood, and who share it with wisdom and kindness. For the truth is a trust from Allah, and we will be asked about how we preserved and conveyed it. May Allah make us steadfast in truth and grant us the courage to speak it, live it, and share it with all of humanity.
