Explanation of the Verse:
This verse unveils a layer of hypocrisy and cunning among the Jews of Medina at the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). When the hypocritical among them met the sincere believers, they would say with their tongues, "We believe," claiming to share the same faith as the Muslims. They did this to appear agreeable and to hide their true intentions.
But when they withdrew to their own circles, away from the believers, their leaders and the more honest among them would rebuke them, saying: "Do you tell the believers what Allah has revealed to you in the Torah — that Muhammad is the true Messenger, and that his coming is clearly foretold in your scripture? Do you not realize that by doing so, you give them a decisive argument against you? They will use your own words as proof before your Lord on the Day of Judgment, saying: 'You yourselves admitted the truth of his prophethood, yet you rejected him!'"
The verse closes with a piercing rhetorical question: "Do you not understand?" — meaning, do you not use your intellect to see the harm you are bringing upon yourselves? If you truly believe in the Torah, why would you arm your opponents with the very evidence that condemns you?
This verse teaches us a profound lesson about sincerity and the danger of double-faced behavior. It shows that truth cannot be hidden forever, and that those who play with faith as a game will ultimately be exposed — in this world or the next. It also highlights the beauty of Islam: it is a religion of honesty, where one's words and actions must align. The believer is called to be steadfast, truthful, and consistent, for Allah knows what is in the hearts, and His knowledge encompasses every secret whisper.
So, dear reader, let this verse inspire you to be among those whose outward appearance matches their inner conviction — for the pure heart that is honest with Allah and His creation is the one that finds peace in this life and salvation in the Hereafter.
