📖 English Meaning
Then, you are those [same ones who are] killing one another and evicting a party of your people from their homes, cooperating against them in sin and aggression. And if they come to you as captives, you ransom them, although their eviction was forbidden to you. So do you believe in part of the Scripture and disbelieve in part? Then what is the recompense for those who do that among you except disgrace in worldly life; and on the Day of Resurrection they will be sent back to the severest of punishment. And Allah is not unaware of what you do.

Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "Taqtulūna anfusakum" — You kill one another; literally "you kill yourselves," meaning the killing of fellow members of the same community or faith.
  • "Tuz'hijūna" — You drive out, expel.
  • "Tazāharūna" — You support and aid one another, joining forces.
  • "Al-ithm" — Sin, wrongdoing.
  • "Al-'udwān" — Aggression, transgression beyond limits.
  • "Tufādūhum" — You ransom them, paying a price to free captives.
  • "Khizy" — Disgrace, humiliation, and shame.

The Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound verse, Allah addresses the Children of Israel with a stern rebuke for their contradictory behavior. Despite having taken a solemn covenant to uphold the Torah's laws, they violated it in the most egregious ways. They killed one another, expelled entire communities from their homes, and even allied with enemies against their own brethren — all out of sin and aggression. Yet, when some of their people were taken captive by enemies, they would rush to pay their ransom and free them, believing this to be a virtuous act commanded by their scripture.

Allah exposes the deep inconsistency in their conduct: they believed in one part of the Book — the obligation to ransom captives — while rejecting another part — the prohibition of killing and expelling fellow believers. This selective faith is a grave corruption. The consequence of such behavior is nothing but disgrace and humiliation in this worldly life, and on the Day of Judgment, they will be subjected to the most severe punishment. And Allah is never unaware of what they do; He sees all, and His justice is certain.

A Call to Reflection and Sincerity:

This verse carries a timeless lesson for all of humanity. It warns us against the danger of selective obedience — believing in what suits our desires and ignoring what challenges them. True faith is not a buffet where we pick and choose; it is a complete submission to Allah's will. The Qur'an repeatedly calls us to embrace Islam wholly, not partially. When we accept some commands and reject others, we weaken our own souls and invite discord into our communities.

Let this be a reminder to every believer: our unity is sacred, our brothers and sisters in faith are our family, and our obedience to Allah must be total and sincere. The disgrace that befell the Children of Israel was not because they were unaware of the truth, but because they knowingly contradicted it. Let us not fall into the same trap. Let us hold fast to the rope of Allah together, honor our covenants, and strive for righteousness in all aspects of our lives. For Allah is ever watchful, and His reward for the sincere is immense, while His punishment for the hypocritical is severe. May we be among those who hear the call of truth and respond with complete devotion.

📜 Verse 83-87 — Al-Baqarah

And [recall] when We took the covenant from the Children of Israel, [enjoining upon them], "Do not worship except Allah; and to parents do good and to relatives, orphans, and the needy. And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakah." Then you turned away, except a few of you, and you were refusing.
And [recall] when We took your covenant, [saying], "Do not shed each other's blood or evict one another from your homes." Then you acknowledged [this] while you were witnessing.
Those are the ones who have bought the life of this world [in exchange] for the Hereafter, so the punishment will not be lightened for them, nor will they be aided.
And We did certainly give Moses the Torah and followed up after him with messengers. And We gave Jesus, the son of Mary, clear proofs and supported him with the Pure Spirit. But is it [not] that every time a messenger came to you, [O Children of Israel], with what your souls did not desire, you were arrogant? And a party [of messengers] you denied and another party you killed.
