Explanation of the Verse:
O Children of Israel! Remember when Allah took a solemn and binding covenant from you — recorded in the Torah — that you would not shed one another’s blood, nor drive one another out of your homes and lands. This was not a mere suggestion; it was a sacred pledge, a divine obligation. And then — despite your history of breaking such pledges — you acknowledged this covenant as true and accepted it, and you yourselves bear witness to its validity even now.
This verse reminds us of a profound principle: that the lives, honor, and homes of people are sacred. No one has the right to take another’s life unjustly, nor to force another from their dwelling. The covenant here addressed the Children of Israel, but its essence is a universal moral law that Islam came to perfect and uphold. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim; he does not wrong him, nor forsake him, nor despise him. The blood, wealth, and honor of every Muslim are sacred to another Muslim." (Sahih Muslim)
Notice how Allah reminds them: "Then you acknowledged it, and you bear witness." This is a call to honesty — to live by what we know to be true, and to honor the commitments we make with our Creator and with one another. How beautiful is this Qur’anic method: it appeals to the conscience, reminding us that we are not only accountable to others, but to Allah who witnesses all.
For us as believers, this verse carries a timeless lesson: our words and covenants carry weight. When we promise, we must fulfill. When we know the truth, we must not contradict it. And above all, we must protect the sanctity of human life and dignity — for in Islam, the life of every person is a trust from Allah, and harming another is harming oneself, for we are all part of one human family.
Let this verse inspire us to be people of integrity — those who honor their pledges, protect the weak, and never raise a hand or a word to drive another from their home or their rights. This is the noble character that Islam cultivates, and it is the path to Allah’s love and mercy.
