Word Meanings:
- Al-Dār al-Ākhirah (الدَّارُ الْآخِرَةُ): The final abode, meaning Paradise (Jannah) in the Hereafter.
- Khāliṣah (خَالِصَةً): Exclusive, pure, reserved solely for them without any share for others.
- Tamannaw al-Mawt (فَتَمَنَّوُا الْمَوْتَ): Wish for death, i.e., ask for it and long for it.
- Ṣādiqīn (صَادِقِينَ): Truthful in your claim.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Prophet, say to the Jews who falsely claim that Paradise is reserved exclusively for them — that they are Allah’s chosen people and that no one else will enter Jannah besides them: "If this claim of yours is true, and the Hereafter’s bliss is indeed yours alone before Allah, then wish for death!" For whoever is certain that their final destination is Paradise would long for it eagerly, since death is the only gateway to reaching that eternal reward. It would also relieve them of the burdens and trials of this worldly life. So if you are truthful in your assertion, then call for death — but you will never do so, because your hearts know the reality of your deeds and your false claims. This challenge stands as an undeniable proof against them, exposing their lies and their fear of what awaits them.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse is a profound challenge that lays bare the contradiction in the claims of those who assert exclusive rights to Allah’s mercy while their actions contradict their words. It teaches us a beautiful lesson: true faith is not merely a verbal claim, but a conviction that translates into longing for Allah’s reward and readiness to meet Him. The believer who genuinely loves Allah and His Paradise does not fear death, but sees it as a bridge to eternal bliss. This verse also highlights the justice and wisdom of Allah — He does not accept mere pretensions, but judges by sincerity and deeds. Let this be a reminder for all of us to purify our intentions, strengthen our connection with Allah, and live in a way that makes us yearn for His meeting, not out of despair, but out of love and hope in His infinite mercy. Indeed, Allah’s mercy encompasses all who believe and do righteous deeds, and His Paradise is open to every sincere servant who strives for it.
