Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Mīthāq (ميثاق): A solemn, binding covenant or pledge.
  • Ṭūr (الطور): The mountain (specifically Mount Sinai) that was raised above them.
  • Bi-Quwwah (بقوة): With strength, seriousness, and firm resolve.
  • Ushribū (أُشربوا): Literally "they were made to drink" — meaning the love of the calf was deeply infused and embedded into their hearts, like a drink that penetrates the body.
  • Bi’samā (بئسما): How evil or terrible is that which...

Tafsir (Explanation):

O believers, remember that profound moment in history when Allah took a solemn covenant from the Children of Israel — a binding pledge to accept what Prophet Musa (Moses) brought from Allah and to follow it faithfully. Yet, they broke that covenant almost immediately. So Allah raised Mount Sinai high above their heads as a terrifying reminder, and they were told: "Hold firmly to what We have given you (the Torah) with all your strength and seriousness, and hear — meaning listen and obey."

Faced with the mountain looming over them, they verbally responded, "We hear," but their hearts and actions betrayed them, for they added, "and we disobey." Their submission was merely outward, born of fear, not of genuine faith. Moreover, their hearts had been saturated with the love of the calf they had worshipped — this love had penetrated so deeply into their hearts that it was as if they had drunk it, and this was the direct consequence of their persistent disbelief.

Then Allah instructs His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to rebuke them: "Say: How evil is that which your faith commands you to do!" — meaning, if you truly claim to be believers, then what kind of faith is this that leads you to worship a calf instead of the Creator of the heavens and the earth? True faith commands goodness, obedience, and submission to Allah alone. A faith that commands disbelief is no faith at all.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every soul. It teaches us that faith is not merely a word uttered by the tongue — it is a reality that must take root in the heart and manifest in action. The Children of Israel said "we hear" but their hearts were filled with disobedience. How often do we find ourselves in a similar state? We hear the words of the Qur'an, we listen to reminders, but do our hearts truly submit? Do our actions reflect what we claim to believe?

Dear reader, let this verse be a mirror for your own soul. Allah does not want from you a superficial faith that merely exists on your lips. He wants a faith that transforms your heart, purifies your intentions, and guides your deeds. When you truly believe, your faith will command you to goodness, to prayer, to kindness, to honesty, and to love for your fellow human beings. If your "faith" ever leads you away from Allah's commands, then question that faith — for true faith never contradicts the will of its Creator.

The beauty of Islam is that it invites you to a living, breathing relationship with Allah — one where your heart drinks the love of Allah, not the love of false gods or worldly distractions. Purify your heart today, and let it be filled with the sweetness of iman. For a heart filled with faith in Allah will never be led astray, and a soul that truly submits will find peace beyond measure.

📜 Verse 91-95 — Al-Baqarah

And when it is said to them, "Believe in what Allah has revealed," they say, "We believe [only] in what was revealed to us." And they disbelieve in what came after it, while it is the truth confirming that which is with them. Say, "Then why did you kill the prophets of Allah before, if you are [indeed] believers?"
And Moses had certainly brought you clear proofs. Then you took the calf [in worship] after that, while you were wrongdoers.
And [recall] when We took your covenant and raised over you the mount, [saying], "Take what We have given you with determination and listen." They said [instead], "We hear and disobey." And their hearts absorbed [the worship of] the calf because of their disbelief. Say, "How wretched is that which your faith enjoins upon you, if you should be believers."
Say, [O Muhammad], "If the home of the Hereafter with Allah is for you alone and not the [other] people, then wish for death, if you should be truthful.
But they will never wish for it, ever, because of what their hands have put forth. And Allah is Knowing of the wrongdoers.
